About SYO
South Yorkshire Orienteers (SYO) have 300 members ranging in age from 5 to 85. There is a wide range of ability and experience within the club from beginners to elite orienteers, who represent Great Britain all over the world. We offer a friendly and informal welcome to the sport - supporting adult and junior beginners and more seasoned orienteers alike with coaching and a programme of regular events.
South Yorkshire Orienteers is member of the Yorkshire and Humberside Orienteering Association (YHOA) and British Orienteering.
What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on an orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.
It does not matter how young, old or fit you are as you can choose the course that's right for you and run, jog or walk it at your own pace. It is excellent for adults wanting to shape up, add some excitement and mental challenge to their running and meet new friends. It is also ideal for families as everyone can take part at the level that's right for them and it allows children to develop independence, confidence and decision making skills.

SYO Juniors qualify for Yvette Baker Trophy Final
Congratulations to the 31 strong SYO team at the Yvette Baker Trophy event on Sunday 26th April at Cromford Moor.
Yellow Girls: Elisabeth Mill, Imogen Pieters, Erin Bryant, Freya Tryner, Rachel Turner, Claire Turner, Carys Phoenix, Naomi Thornton & Elisabeth Chung.
Yellow Boys: Frederick Emmett, Conrad Reuber, Alfie Hall, Sam Doyle, Jonny Watson, Henry McDonald & Daniel Hill

We placed 2nd to an experienced Leicestershire Orienteers (LEI) team. However, because they were in the top five in the final last year, SYO also qualifies for the final.
For many of our juniors this was only the 1st or 2nd big event they've competed in. Particular congratulations to our newer members whose score counted to the 1st team: Alex Elliot on Orange Women, Frederick Emmett on Yellow Men and Elisabeth Mill and Imogen Pieters on Yellow Women. Our other counters were Pippa Dakin, Louise Adams, Yasmin Field, Euan Tryner, Joe Field and Ronan Sahni. The other team members also played a vital role by keeping the other clubs scores lower. Indeed our 2nd team beat some other clubs' 1st teams!
Thank you to all the parents that drove their children to the event and supported us so effectively.
The final is on Sunday 5th July at Nottingham University and Highfield North (Terrain: Leafy University campus with adjacent inner city parkland, which should play to our strengths!). Please put the date in your diaries.
World Schools Championships
Pippa Dakin finished 5th in the Middle race at the World Schools Championships in Antalya, Turkey following on from her 8th place in the Long race to help the English team to second place overall in the senior girls competition. British Champs
SYO celebrated plenty of podium positions at the British championships last weekend down in the Forest of Dean.
The Individual Day was held in New Beechenhurst - a lovely runnable deciduous forest with a complex network of ditches. The excellent facilities and beautiful sunshine, coupled with good planning and an excellent map (by SYO's Dave Peel) combined to produce a really enjoyable day.
Congratulations to new British Champions, Aidan Smith (M20 Elite) and Nick Barrable (M40). There were also podium positions for Jamie Lightfoot (3rd M10A), Euan Tryner (3rd M12A), Charlie Adams (3rd M50L), Tim Tett (2nd M55L) and Jenny Peel (3rd W45L). On the shorter courses Judith Guillaume was 1st on W60S, Pauline Tryner 1st on W40S and Freya Tryner 2nd on W10B.
The relays were held on Canop Ponds, another runnable but hilly deciduous forest. SYO were involved in some exciting head to head races and achieved a number of podium places. Particular congratulations to M50 British Champions - Tim Tett, Nick Lightfoot and Charlie Adams. A special mention must also go to bronze medallists in the Mens Premier Class - Aidan Smith, Michael Adams and Dane Blomquist - an excellent result particularly considering they are all still juniors!
In the other relay competitions, the M14 (Joe Field, Euan Tryner & Dom Dakin), M40 (Nick Barrable, Martin Ward & Pete Tryner) and W40 (Lucy Wiegand, Pauline Tryner & Jenny Peel) teams all narrowly missed out on victory and had to settle for silver.

The next big competition is the British Sprint Championships in Aldershot and the British Middle Championships in High Wycombe over the weekend of the 9th / 10th May. The closing date for entries is midnight on the 26th April, so it's not too late to enter if you haven't already done so. Also good luck to all SYO juniors running in the Yvette Baker Trophy this Sunday at Cromford Moor.
