About SYO
South Yorkshire Orienteers (SYO) have 300 members ranging in age from 5 to 85. There is a wide range of ability and experience within the club from beginners to elite orienteers, who represent Great Britain all over the world. We offer a friendly and informal welcome to the sport - supporting adult and junior beginners and more seasoned orienteers alike with coaching and a programme of regular events.
South Yorkshire Orienteers is member of the Yorkshire and Humberside Orienteering Association (YHOA) and British Orienteering.
What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on an orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.
It does not matter how young, old or fit you are as you can choose the course that's right for you and run, jog or walk it at your own pace. It is excellent for adults wanting to shape up, add some excitement and mental challenge to their running and meet new friends. It is also ideal for families as everyone can take part at the level that's right for them and it allows children to develop independence, confidence and decision making skills.

Yvette Baker Finals
More photos on Facebook
Sunday 5th July was the final of the Yvette Baker Trophy - an inter-club competition specifically for juniors. Clubs from all over the country converged on Nottingham University for an afternoon of exciting racing in gorgeous sunshine. Unusually for the YBT final, it was an urban race so there were some very fast winning times.
Twenty nine juniors competed on behalf of SYO, including many of our new members. The winners were Devon, with LOC (Lakeland Orienteering Club) in 2nd and BOK (Bristol Orienteering Club) in 3rd one point behind. Our team was noticeably younger than many of the others but we finished in a creditable 11th place. Everyone acquitted themselves well against older, more experienced runners and really enjoyed the experience. Full results are available on the NOC website.
Well done in particular to the juniors whose scores counted for our 1st team:
Dominic Dakin - green men
Louise Adams - green women
Yasmin Field - light green women
Euan Tryner - orange men
Alex Elliot - orange women
Conrad Reuber - yellow men
Rachel Turner - yellow women
Imogen Pieters - yellow women
Naomi Thornton - yellow women

Preliminary results and splits are available from the event pageThere are also some photos on our Facebook page.
As ever a huge thanks to all the helpers, especially the parents of many of the kids who have started recently.
