About SYO
South Yorkshire Orienteers (SYO) have 300 members ranging in age from 5 to 85. There is a wide range of ability and experience within the club from beginners to elite orienteers, who represent Great Britain all over the world. We offer a friendly and informal welcome to the sport - supporting adult and junior beginners and more seasoned orienteers alike with coaching and a programme of regular events.
South Yorkshire Orienteers is member of the Yorkshire and Humberside Orienteering Association (YHOA) and British Orienteering.
What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on an orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.
It does not matter how young, old or fit you are as you can choose the course that's right for you and run, jog or walk it at your own pace. It is excellent for adults wanting to shape up, add some excitement and mental challenge to their running and meet new friends. It is also ideal for families as everyone can take part at the level that's right for them and it allows children to develop independence, confidence and decision making skills.

British Champion titles for SYO
Jenny Peel and Bill Edwards, W45 & M45 middle race champions.
Last weekend saw more great results for SYO at the British Middle and Sprint Championships.
British Sprint Chamionships
Saturday's Sprint Event was held around Aldershot Garrison. Courses were well planned and led to fast and furious racing. It was also a chance to try Emit's new touch free punching. Well done to Rachael Rothman (W35) and Jenny Peel (W45) who triumphed in the A finals to become British Sprint Champions. There were also podium places for Bill Edwards (3rd M45) and Peter Gorvett (2nd M65).
British Middle Championships
Sunday's British Middle Championships were held at Park Wood, Bradenham & Naphill. The technical but runnable woodland was clearly suited to our members resulting in several podium positions. Congratulations to new British Champions Bill Edwards (M45), Tim Tett (M55), Rachael Rothman (W35) and Jenny Peel (W45). Aidan Smith (M20), Pete Tryner (M40), Charlie Adams (M50), Pete Gorvett (M65) & Pippa Dakin (W18) won silver; while Alex Rothman (M35) was awarded bronze.

Pippa Dakin reports - World Schools 2015
SYO Junior, Pippa Dakin, recently competed in the World Schools Orienteering Championships in Antalya, Turkey. Read the report on her fantastic experiece.....
18-24 April, Antalya, Turkey
After spending Sunday morning training, getting used to the terrain, I was really excited about the week ahead in amazing terrains which were totally different to anything I’ve ever experienced before; it was very rocky underfoot which made for difficult running, but the absence of brambles made up for this!
SYO Success at British Orienteering's Award Night
SYO scooped a number of prestigious awards at the recent British Orienteering AGM. Colin Best, Club Chair, was delighted to accept the award for Club of the Year on behalf of SYO. This was awarded in recognition of the outstanding contribution the club has made in the provision and development of orienteering.
SYO's Ian Cooper was awarded the Bonnington Trophy in recognition of the years of dedication and talent he has put into creating and updating maps for SYO. Ian has put in thousands of hours, over the years, on a voluntary basis providing mapping services for the club and this is a thoroughly deserved award. The piece of rock in the perspex part of the trophy is a bit of the Everest Summit brought back by Chris Bonnington.
SYO's Dave Peel also enjoyed great success. Peel Land Services, who provide professional mapping services to the orienteering community, were awarded the Silva Trophy for his superb maps of the 2014 JK areas. Another thoroughly well deserved recipient!
