About SYO
South Yorkshire Orienteers (SYO) have 300 members ranging in age from 5 to 85. There is a wide range of ability and experience within the club from beginners to elite orienteers, who represent Great Britain all over the world. We offer a friendly and informal welcome to the sport - supporting adult and junior beginners and more seasoned orienteers alike with coaching and a programme of regular events.
South Yorkshire Orienteers is member of the Yorkshire and Humberside Orienteering Association (YHOA) and British Orienteering.
What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on an orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.
It does not matter how young, old or fit you are as you can choose the course that's right for you and run, jog or walk it at your own pace. It is excellent for adults wanting to shape up, add some excitement and mental challenge to their running and meet new friends. It is also ideal for families as everyone can take part at the level that's right for them and it allows children to develop independence, confidence and decision making skills.

New website goes live
SYO has a new website. It was agreed at committee that we would upgrade the website to make it even more useful for members, and easier for members to contribute to. So, we have set up this website that uses a Content Management System (CMS) called Joomla, and are in the process of transferring the old articles, results, etc onto the new site. The old site will remain available for a limited period here.
Please be patient while the new site gets "up and running". We would certainly appreciate your feedback, and any suggestions you may have, if you have anything to say, leave a comment on this article or contact Martin Ward or Adam Bradbury from the "Contact" menu.

SYO juniors win Peter Palmer Relay
SYO had two teams in last night's Peter Palmer Relay. Congratulations to SYO 1 (Aidan Smith, Simon Bradbury, Adam Bradbury, Katherine Hall, Louise Adams, Rachel Crehan, Zac Field), who took 181:01, winning by nearly 6 minutes.
This is the first time SYO have won the Peter Palmer Trophy. The competition was organised by BAOC at Chetwynd Army Barracks near Nottingham.
The courses were largely urban - unusual for this event - which made for some fast racing, with quick decision making required from all the runners despite the 4.45 am start. The accommodation, assembly area, start and finish were all inside a massive hangar, with the spectator control just outside which added to the overall atmosphere.
In the Joan George class there were some good runs from SYO2 (Michael Adams, Jake Field, Ryan Wilson, Alex Hall, Yasmin Field, Megan Crehan, Cari Littler). Quite a few juniors taking part had not attended this type of event before and it was quite an experience! Well done to everyone involved, including parents and helpers but especially to the junior teams!

Successful Sheffield City Race
Competitors enjoyed Rob and Clare's exciting courses in the sunshine at The Ponderosa in Sheffield yesterday. The senior courses in the prologue had a control every 50m on average, making for extreme difficulty in keeping one's brain ahead of one's legs. Both courses featured twisty gennels (alleys in south-speak), unexpected dead-ends and complex route choices.
In the open classes, Richard Robinson overcame a 10 second (but four-place) deficit after the first race to win the Men's, while there was a close finish in the Women's when Mairead Rocke's 12 second lead on the second race was enough to overtake Jenny Johnson's 7-second advantage after the first.
