About SYO
South Yorkshire Orienteers (SYO) have 300 members ranging in age from 5 to 85. There is a wide range of ability and experience within the club from beginners to elite orienteers, who represent Great Britain all over the world. We offer a friendly and informal welcome to the sport - supporting adult and junior beginners and more seasoned orienteers alike with coaching and a programme of regular events.
South Yorkshire Orienteers is member of the Yorkshire and Humberside Orienteering Association (YHOA) and British Orienteering.
What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on an orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.
It does not matter how young, old or fit you are as you can choose the course that's right for you and run, jog or walk it at your own pace. It is excellent for adults wanting to shape up, add some excitement and mental challenge to their running and meet new friends. It is also ideal for families as everyone can take part at the level that's right for them and it allows children to develop independence, confidence and decision making skills.

SYO through to CompassSport Cup Final
At Silton today, SYO won the CompassSport Cup heat ahead of AIRE to secure our place in the final. As SYO are the current CompassSport Cup champions, AIRE also go through to the final which is to be held on Sunday 16th October by DVO at Longshaw (just over the road from last year's final at Burbage). There are quite a few teams in this year's final, see here.
Well done to all those that counted to SYO's victory and even those who didn't - they will have lowered other peoples' points. Make sure you have marked the final in your diaries, let's try and make it a fourth win in-a-row!
The results from today's CSC heat are available on the CLOK website.

SYO Hall of Fame
Adam Bradbury and I have added new sections to the About SYO/Hall of Fame drop-down which give details of all our winners in various categories since SYO was formed in 1972. They were originally part of a booklet given to members in 1997 to celebrate our silver jubilee and for which many had assisted by looking through old results, and other research was done from old newsletters and CompassSports. Fortunately, since 1997 it became much easier to keep the spreadsheet up to date as results became available online.
In the next few weeks we will add further sections giving details of all SYO events, maps, how the club was formed and other things, all of which we hope you will find 'interesting'!
