About SYO
South Yorkshire Orienteers (SYO) have 300 members ranging in age from 5 to 85. There is a wide range of ability and experience within the club from beginners to elite orienteers, who represent Great Britain all over the world. We offer a friendly and informal welcome to the sport - supporting adult and junior beginners and more seasoned orienteers alike with coaching and a programme of regular events.
South Yorkshire Orienteers is member of the Yorkshire and Humberside Orienteering Association (YHOA) and British Orienteering.
What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on an orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.
It does not matter how young, old or fit you are as you can choose the course that's right for you and run, jog or walk it at your own pace. It is excellent for adults wanting to shape up, add some excitement and mental challenge to their running and meet new friends. It is also ideal for families as everyone can take part at the level that's right for them and it allows children to develop independence, confidence and decision making skills.

World Masters Sprint Final
SYO’s Nick Barrable (M35) took the Gold at the WMOC Sprint Final around the Olympic Park in Sydney. Success too for the Edwards Family, now living in New Zealand, with Gold for Bill (M40) and Silver for Susan (W35).
Although Peter Gorvett qualified fastest in M60 he didn’t get into the medals in the final, finishing 5th. The competition now moves to the Blue Mountains where the Long Qualification races start on Wednesday, culminating in the Long Final on Saturday 17th October. Track their progress here.
Puglia 2009 - Italian 5-days
Day 1 was actually at night, around an old city (Vico del Gargano), and was almost as challenging as the maize maze race had been. Then days 2 and 3 were in the Forest of Umbra, an ancient beech forest high up in the mountains. Day 4 was back at the coast, on some sand dune terrain (and the thickest thickest I've ever tried orienteering amongst - people were getting ripped to shreds). Finally day 5 was another street race, in Pesichi, an old coastal town.
Despite not winning any of the individual races, I managed to win H40 overall by just over a minute after the 5 days. There are some maps online: Day 1 and Day 2.
A-maizing win for Dave
Several SYO members tried a new form of orienteering last Saturday - a race in a maize maze organised by Walton Chasers, at the maze in the National Forest near Burton. Although the maze only covered an area of about 200m by 100m, and each course was only about 700m to 900m "straight line", the actual distances covered were much greater. There were two qualifying rounds, and then finals, with each race being won in about 22 minutes. The final race was held in the dark, and Dave Peel won the men's category.
