About SYO
South Yorkshire Orienteers (SYO) have 300 members ranging in age from 5 to 85. There is a wide range of ability and experience within the club from beginners to elite orienteers, who represent Great Britain all over the world. We offer a friendly and informal welcome to the sport - supporting adult and junior beginners and more seasoned orienteers alike with coaching and a programme of regular events.
South Yorkshire Orienteers is member of the Yorkshire and Humberside Orienteering Association (YHOA) and British Orienteering.
What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on an orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.
It does not matter how young, old or fit you are as you can choose the course that's right for you and run, jog or walk it at your own pace. It is excellent for adults wanting to shape up, add some excitement and mental challenge to their running and meet new friends. It is also ideal for families as everyone can take part at the level that's right for them and it allows children to develop independence, confidence and decision making skills.

SYO Juniors Qualify for Yvette Baker Final
Today at EBOR's event at Ashdale Forest SYO's junior team qualified for the Yvette Baker Trophy final which is to be held at Mausoleum Woods (HALO) on Sunday 4th December. They had a 9 point lead over 2nd placed CLARO who only just pipped AIRE by 2 points.
Our juniors were helped by (junior) wins on the Green Boys, Light Green Girls and Orange Girls. On the Green course, Aidan, Zac and Michael secured 1st, 2nd and 3rd places respectively with several minutes lead.
This is the 3rd year in a row that SYO's juniors have qualified for the Yvette Baker Trophy Final. Congratulations to them all for their runs today and good luck at the final!
SYO take CompassSport Cup for 4th year running
Today SYO won the British Orienteering Club Championships very comfortably, with 2224 points, 161 points more than second place Octavian Droobers.
Congratulations to all our runners. Oli Johnson and Rob Baker have had a particularly successful weekend, being members of the Dark Peak Fell Runners team that won the FRA relay the previous day.
There were a couple of items of lost property: a pair of New Balance trainers and a watch. Please contact me (petergorvett on Hotmail.co.uk) to arrange return. Please contact Tim Tett if you didn't get a chance to collect your map.

Congratulations to SYO's junior team who came 2nd at the Peter Palmer Relays on Sunday in Stafford. The juniors were just beaten by Lakeland by 2 minutes and are determined to reclaim the Peter palmer Trophy next year.
The Peter Palmers are an overnight relay for juniors that start in the early morning when it is dark and by the time the last runner is back it is light. This year's event was organised by British Army Orienteering Club for the second year in a row and the barracks presented an interested change from the more traditional rural areas.
