About SYO
South Yorkshire Orienteers (SYO) have 300 members ranging in age from 5 to 85. There is a wide range of ability and experience within the club from beginners to elite orienteers, who represent Great Britain all over the world. We offer a friendly and informal welcome to the sport - supporting adult and junior beginners and more seasoned orienteers alike with coaching and a programme of regular events.
South Yorkshire Orienteers is member of the Yorkshire and Humberside Orienteering Association (YHOA) and British Orienteering.
What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on an orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.
It does not matter how young, old or fit you are as you can choose the course that's right for you and run, jog or walk it at your own pace. It is excellent for adults wanting to shape up, add some excitement and mental challenge to their running and meet new friends. It is also ideal for families as everyone can take part at the level that's right for them and it allows children to develop independence, confidence and decision making skills.

Training 7th December
It was great to see such a large turn out at our last training at Redmires Resevoir. Hopefully everyone found something useful to take out of the training. Next on the menu is Burbage mines on Saturday 7th of November (1-3pm). For those that haven't been, Burbage Mines is a small area of very intricate mining works and is perfect for practising using contours, which is the focus for this weeks session.
As usual there will be a number of courses on offer so there will be something for everyone and the compact nature of the area means that it is a great area to practice on.
Parking is in the layby, about 500m west of Ringinglow on Ringinglow road. Controls will be out from 1pm until 3pm and maps will cost £1.
Look forward to seeing you all.
Kris
Upcoming training events
Now that the evenings have drawn in, club training has moved to the weekend. Over the next month there will be two club trainings; Firstly, this weekend we will be training at Redmires resevoir and on the 7th of December we will be training on Burbage mines. These training events are for the whole club and will have training exercises tailored to all abilities. If you want to improve your orienteering then these events are for you.
Coaching will be provided by club coach and World Championships runner Kris Jones. For more information see the event pages here.
