About SYO
South Yorkshire Orienteers (SYO) have 300 members ranging in age from 5 to 85. There is a wide range of ability and experience within the club from beginners to elite orienteers, who represent Great Britain all over the world. We offer a friendly and informal welcome to the sport - supporting adult and junior beginners and more seasoned orienteers alike with coaching and a programme of regular events.
South Yorkshire Orienteers is member of the Yorkshire and Humberside Orienteering Association (YHOA) and British Orienteering.
What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on an orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.
It does not matter how young, old or fit you are as you can choose the course that's right for you and run, jog or walk it at your own pace. It is excellent for adults wanting to shape up, add some excitement and mental challenge to their running and meet new friends. It is also ideal for families as everyone can take part at the level that's right for them and it allows children to develop independence, confidence and decision making skills.

Junior International Selections
After dominating their respective classes in the selection races in the JK at Easter, Pippa Dakin and Aidan Smith have both been selected to represent Great Britain this summer.
Pippa performed well in last years World Schools Championships in Portugal and steps up this year to the Euopean Youth Championships in Macedonia in June hoping that the form that took her to clear victories at the JK and the Northern Championships will help her to compete against the best W16's in the world. Pippa, a product of Colin Best's junior training scheme, has only been orienteering for a little over 3 years, and shows what can be achieved with hard work and determination.
Aidan is already a veteran of the international scene and this year's Junior World Orienteering Championships in Bulgaria in July will be his third. His move to Oxford University saw a shift in training to rowing and cross country, adding speed and strength to his natural map reading talents to enable him to take on the best juniors in the world.
There should be live results hopefully with GPS tracking so if you want to follow Pippa and Aidan's progress look out for links from the British Orienteering website.
If you think you've got what it takes to succeed in orienteering and want to know how to progress, come along to one of our training sessions and ask. Not everyone can be a champion but you can have lots of fun trying!
South Yorkshire Juniors win regional round of Yvette Baker Trophy
Sunday 27th April saw a team of 16 SYO juniors travel to the Yorkshire heat of the junior inter-club competition in Harrogate. This marked a massive improvement on last year when we failed to mobilise a full team of 9 counters.
This year we were able to field runners across all 4 courses and there were a number of strong performances. All 9 of our counters placed in the top 3 of their class and the other clubs were unable to compete. The winning margin was 7 points which indicates a reasonably comfortable victory.
This victory qualifies us for the national final which is being held in southern England on 6th July. Unfortunately this clashes with the 2nd stage of the Tour de France which finishes in Sheffield. This once-in-a-lifetime experience was deemed too much of opportunity to miss and hence SYO will not be sending a team to the final this year. Hopefully we can qualify again next year and show our strength in the 2015 Final.
The SYO counters were Pippa Dakin, Joe Owens, Michael Adams, Euan Tryner, Louise Adams, Imogen Clowes, Hamish Mill, Dominic Dakin and Jake Field. The other competing (and reducing the scores of other teams) were Yasmin Field, Joanna Smith, Joe Field, Callum Veitch, Ryan Elliot, Alex Elliot, Sam Hallam and Jack Page.
Interland 2014 29/30 March
SYO was well represented at this year’s Interland with 6 runners all making the journey to northern France. 5 of us made the 3 hour journey down to the rendezvous together on Friday night; Charlie and Louise Adams, Lucy Wiegand, new member Sheila Sprott and of course myself, Michael Adams.
Interland is an annual competition between England and 4 other teams from Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands with competitors from M/W14 to M/W60.
