About SYO
South Yorkshire Orienteers (SYO) have 300 members ranging in age from 5 to 85. There is a wide range of ability and experience within the club from beginners to elite orienteers, who represent Great Britain all over the world. We offer a friendly and informal welcome to the sport - supporting adult and junior beginners and more seasoned orienteers alike with coaching and a programme of regular events.
South Yorkshire Orienteers is member of the Yorkshire and Humberside Orienteering Association (YHOA) and British Orienteering.
What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on an orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.
It does not matter how young, old or fit you are as you can choose the course that's right for you and run, jog or walk it at your own pace. It is excellent for adults wanting to shape up, add some excitement and mental challenge to their running and meet new friends. It is also ideal for families as everyone can take part at the level that's right for them and it allows children to develop independence, confidence and decision making skills.

Podiums aplenty at the British Champs
Over the weekend of 26th & 27th March, a large contingent of SYO members travelled to Liphook to compete in the British Long and Relay Champs. The individual championships were held in glorious sunshine on Golden Valley & Cognor Woods. Courses were super tough, with a very hard uphill run in, and there were some very long times – all those who finished can be very proud! There were some super performances from our juniors and seniors alike but the greatest accolades must go to our 8 new British Champions:
Louis Bryant M10
Maxwell Groom M12
Andy Preston M45
Peter Gorvett M75
Hannah Chapman W12
Ella Baxter W14
Imogen Pieters W18E
Jenny Peel W50

SYO qualify for Compass Sport Cup Final
SYO sailed comfortably through the Compass Sport Cup heat yesterday to secure a place in the final.
Despite a team hampered by illness and injury, 72 members competed on behalf of the club at Duncombe Park and Windy Pits. Well done to everyone who raced - even if you didn't count towards the SYO total, you still contributed by pushing down the scores of others and played a very important part in our victory! It was also really great to see 8 members counting for the first time in the Compass Sport competition.
We had a tremendous number of course winners; 11 in total, scoring the maximum 100 points - Oli, Pete T, Kim, Charlie, Amanda, Tim T, Alexandra, Euan, Alice, Maxwell and Brian. Well done also to the other scorers - Martin, Ciara, Hannah C, Paul N, Peter G, Jenny J, Colin S, Will P, Olmo, Mark C, Lotte, Andy, Anna and Paul B.
The final is on Sunday 16th October in Scotland. It will be hosted by FVO on Devilla, a decent forested area located between Edinburgh and Stirling. We will need a very strong team to successfully defend the trophy against FVO on home turf, so please put the date in your diary. The intention will be to book a coach and group accomodation to enable as many members to go as possible!
