About SYO
South Yorkshire Orienteers (SYO) have 300 members ranging in age from 5 to 85. There is a wide range of ability and experience within the club from beginners to elite orienteers, who represent Great Britain all over the world. We offer a friendly and informal welcome to the sport - supporting adult and junior beginners and more seasoned orienteers alike with coaching and a programme of regular events.
South Yorkshire Orienteers is member of the Yorkshire and Humberside Orienteering Association (YHOA) and British Orienteering.
What is Orienteering?
Orienteering is a challenging outdoor adventure sport. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on an orienteering map and decide the best route to complete the course in the quickest time.
It does not matter how young, old or fit you are as you can choose the course that's right for you and run, jog or walk it at your own pace. It is excellent for adults wanting to shape up, add some excitement and mental challenge to their running and meet new friends. It is also ideal for families as everyone can take part at the level that's right for them and it allows children to develop independence, confidence and decision making skills.

Success for Sheffield Schools at the British Schools Score Champs
Last Saturday a number of Sheffield schools travelled to Martinshaw Wood in Leicestershire to compete in the British Schools Score championship. It was a very successful day with Sheffield pupils grabbing a whole host of medals! The primary girls competition was won by Westways Primary School, while the primary boys competition was won by Hunters Bar Junior School. In the lower secondary boys competition, High Storrs took silver while in the lower secondary girls category, Mercia took bronze.

SYO excel at Junior Home Internationals
Last weekend 9 SYO juniors represented England at the Junior Home Internationals at Sutton Park. England romped home to victory on the individual day aided by some amazing performances by the SYO athletes. Particularly impressive was the SYO girls finishing 1st in W14, W16 & W18! The results for our juniors were as follows:
W14: 1st Ella, 2nd Charlotte
W16: 1st Freya, 3rd Anna
W18: 1st Imogen
M14: 6th Maxwell, 7th Lawrence, 9th Will
M16: 4th James
Day 2 saw the turn of the relays, also at Sutton Park. In the men’s relay, England finished 1st and 3rd. Maxwell was part of the bronze winning team. In the women’s relay, England swept the board achieving gold, silver & bronze. Anna helped England 3 to silver, while England 1 was an all SYO affair with Freya, Ella & Imogen racing superbly to take gold.
Overall, England scored 135 over Scotland on 118 in 2nd, Ireland finished 3rd on 65 and Wales 4th on 33. Thank you to the West Midlands Orienteering Association for organising a fabulous JHIS, team managers Will & Katherine and the SYO chauffeurs Emily & Kris.
Nine SYO athletes represent home nations
Last weekend nine SYO athletes represented their home nations at the Veteran Home Internationals at Mallard’s Pike in the Forest of Dean. There were some fantastic performances in the individual competition. Results were as follows:

Sunday saw the turn of the relays. The best results were achieved by Jenny P and Kim, who were in the 1st and 2nd finishing teams in the Man, Women, Man relay. Overall England won convincingly over Scotland. Wales 3rd and Ireland 4th.
