Jenny Peel is British Night Champion
This year the British Night Championships were held in Ashdown Forest on the 22nd February. The Forest provides a number of venues for south east clubs, and many people consider Pippingford Park to be the jewel in the crown. It is more contoured than most areas in the region, has expanses of runnable heathland and woodland, both with plenty of ‘brown’ features, and in particular, has few paths. This Army Training Site has no public access.
265 competitors entered the 10 courses. Graham Gristwood (FVO) proved to be the Mens Champion (11.0km, 420m in 63.41), with Jegor Kostylev (INT) 5 minutes down and Richard Robinson (NOC) third. In the Ladies classes, an on-form W45 Jenny Peel (SYO) was the Ladies Champion (7.6km, 235m in 68.05), 3 minutes ahead of W21 Helen Gardner (SLOW).
Other SYO champions were Pippa Dakin who won the W16 class for the second year running, Zac Field in M20 and former British Night Champion Dave Peel who won M45.
Congratulations to all the winners and thanks to Mole Valley for organising the event.

We're through to the Final!
Well done to all SYO members who came along and enabled SYO to triumph in the Compass Sport Cup First round – we are back in the Final again. It was close (2400 pts) but we just edged out LOC (2371 pts) and AIRE (2352 pts) (winners 2 years ago). Well done to all of the scorers and particularly the 6 of you who won your courses (out of 11). It wasn’t easy and we really did need everyone there - those who counted and those who didn’t. More details are in Pete's article below.
As some of you will be aware we got knocked out last year at this stage because we had a small team and with no runners outside the scorers to lower our competitors score, we got beaten. This year, everyone made a contribution – so don’t just assume that if you had a bad run this time we don’t need you – we do and WE WILL NEED EVERYONE FOR THE FINAL on Saturday Nov 8th.

SYO Win Regional Round of CompassSport Cup
SYO won their regional round of the Compass Sport Cup, the annual inter-club competition, knocking out 2 of last years finalists in the process.
Congratulations to everyone who ran, even if you didn't count for our score you may have beaten scorers from the other clubs.

ShUOC Training
Sheffield University Orienteering Club have started their weekly "sprintervals" training sessions. These very informal sprint training sessions take place on a Thursday at 4pm, meeting at the gates of the university gym, Goodwin. The sessions start within a short jog of the gym. The map is posted at www.shuoc.co.uk/sprintervals.html in the days before the session, and is there for anyone to print off and run. It can be printed off and run at another time if running with a group of students is not your cup of tea.

YHOA Junior Squad Training
Saturday 8th saw another training day for the YHOA junior squad. Organised by Nev Myers of EBOR, it took place in the SYO area of Wombwell Woods. There was a very good turn out of about 30 juniors who had come from all over Yorkshire, and the weather was not at all as bad as it could have been!
There were 4 exercises planned. The 2 in the morning were a control pick and a light green standard course which was designed to run around as fast as you could! In the afternoon, there was a pairs course, and this was to get you to think about which route choice was better by running opposite ways to each control. To finish, a head-to-head gaffled race with your partner.
Everyone had a very thorough day of quality training and hopefully an enjoyable one too.
