Norfolk Park 29th November
A great turnout at Norfolk Park today. Provisional Results are available here
Thank you to all the volunteers today, both the regulars and also those helping for the first time (The Phoenix family plus Katherine, Piers and Paul). Also thank you to the staff at the centre who were very helpful and couldn't do enough for us. It makes it much easier when we have somewhere warm and dry to run the registration and download.
British Schools Orienteering Championships 2014
Last Sunday, 9 SYO juniors took part in the annual British Schools Champs, which this year was held in the grounds of the Tudor house, at Temple Newsam, Leeds - a mixture of open parkland, and mature woodland. As well as possibly being ensnared by the brambles, other safety hazards included Ha Has, as well as a few ornamental ponds, and the odd grazing cow out and about on the course.
Over 800 school children came from as far afield as Bath and Aberdeenshire. From SYO, the participants were: Louise Adams (Y11), Dom Dakin (Y8), Pippa Dakin (Y12), Jake Field (Y13), Joe Field (Y8), Yasmin Field (Y11), Joe Owens (Y7), Ronan Sahni (Y8), Jo Smith (Y12). Among these 9, there were 4 podium places from Louise Adams (2nd), Dom Dakin (2nd), Pippa Dakin (2nd) and Jake Field (3rd).
Also taking part were six pupils from Dore Primary, who were in the Boys Y5 category. Although there were no podium places, all the competitors (all relatively new to Orienteering) completed their course with no miss-punches.
World Masters Orienteering Championships, Brazil, 1-8 November
The World Masters Orienteering Championships were being held in Brazil. There are two disciplines, Sprint and Long Distance. The sprint final was held on the Monday and SYO members won two medals: Nick Barrable won a gold medal in M40 and Peter Gorvett won silver in M65. In the long distance final was being held on Saturday and although both Nick and Peter have qualified 1st in their heats but only Nick mangaged a second medal, getting joint gold, but Peter finished 5th. John Franklin was in the top half of both A finals.
The event is being held in the far south of Brazil where the weather now is not very different from an warm British summer. There was rain for two out of five races, but warm sunshine for the others. The scenery contains some spectacular sights, with the Spring Final being held next to the 130m-drop Caracol waterfall, the 2nd most popular natural sight in Brazil.
Weston Park - 18th Oct
Another fantastic turnout at Weston Park today - 242 individual runs! Provisional Results are available here
I have to say a massive thank you to all our volunteers on the day for their hard work, without which the event could not have taken place.
We look forward to seeing you at the next Saturday event - 29th November at Norfolk Park. But before that is the Tankersley event on 2nd Novemeber, including a Junior match against EBOR. It would be great to see everyone who has been running in the Saturday events running for SYO there!
Junior Inter-Regional Championships
The Junior Inter-regional Championships (JIRCS) is an annual competition between the regional junior squads in the UK (From M/W14 – M/W18). The competition is an individual race on Saturday followed by a relay on Sunday. This year it was held in the Lake District on the last weekend in September. SYO had several juniors competing in the Yorkshire and Humberside (YHOA) squad and Dominic Dakin gives us an account of the competition below.
