Event Report: Wharncliffe North YHOA Super League event 09.02.2014. Colin Best M65
The YHOA Super League is made up of a number of events offering the best quality cross country terrain in Yorkshire and Humberside.
Well today's event at Wharncliffe certainly offered that. My course, Green, stayed in the woods and didn't venture on to the Chase. It was rough and tough underfoot but the map, updated by Oli Johnson, was excellent and the quality of Colin Drury's planning matched the calibre of the map. It was a real challenge with few handrails to help you. Had you been running the British Champs you couldn't have wanted a greater challenge.
I know Colin had spent hours and hours planning so thank you Colin for a great course.
Junior Training Sessions a Hit
We had a great turn out for level 2/3 (Yellow/Orange) training in Bingham Park on Sunday. The session was aimed at juniors who have been running white / yellow / orange at our Saturday and Schools events and would like to learn new techniques to help them as they progress to harder courses.
The coaching was led by Colin Best and focused on one of the key skills used in Orange courses: using Handrails (fences, walls, vegetation changes, streams etc) rather than just paths. Once everyone got to grips with those they moved on to controls that are just off the handrails.
With the exception of Euan & Joe everyone was new to the club, with some hoping to run in the Compass Sport Cup and Yvette Baker Trophy later in the year.
Colin will be running another session at Ecclesall on 8th Feb. If you are interested please contact him to book a place as spaces are limited. Similar sessions are planned in March to teach other techniques.
SYO members selected for Interland
Congratulations to the members of SYO who have been selected for the English team in the annual event against two Belgian teams (Flemish and French speaking), the Netherlands, the German region Nordrhein-Westfalische and the French Region Nord-Pas de Calais. This year the event is being held in the Pas de Calais area on 30th March. Selections are Aidan Smith (M20), Nick Barrable (M40), Charlie Adams (M45) and Lucy Wiegand (M45), with Michael (M18) and Louise Adams (W16) both selected as travelling reserves.
Club Championships
Last Saturday, 30th November, the South Yorkshire Orienteers club championships were held at Loxley Common, Sheffield. There was a good turnout and the weather was fantastic. Congratulations to our new club champions:
- Euan Tryner - first junior
- Dave Peel - first male senior
- Jenny Peel - first femal senior
Full results can be found on the event page and photos, taken by Clive Wilson, can be found here.
Training 7th December
It was great to see such a large turn out at our last training at Redmires Resevoir. Hopefully everyone found something useful to take out of the training. Next on the menu is Burbage mines on Saturday 7th of November (1-3pm). For those that haven't been, Burbage Mines is a small area of very intricate mining works and is perfect for practising using contours, which is the focus for this weeks session.
As usual there will be a number of courses on offer so there will be something for everyone and the compact nature of the area means that it is a great area to practice on.
Parking is in the layby, about 500m west of Ringinglow on Ringinglow road. Controls will be out from 1pm until 3pm and maps will cost £1.
Look forward to seeing you all.
