Fantastic JWOC results for Aidan Smith
The final individual race in the Junior World Championships today (Thursday 9th July) in Rauland, Southern Norway, was the Long Distance. Aidan Smith (SYO) had a great run to finish on the podium with a fantastic 4th place. This follows his 7th place in the Sprint and 19th in the Middle (Aidan was the only Brit selected for all four disciplines -Sprint, Middle, Long and Relay). Dane Blomquist who also runs for SYO (as well as the closed British Army club) was the second brit at the Sprint in 23rd place.
It is especially good to get such a good result in Norway. In such challenging Scandinavian terrain it is very hard for British-based orienteers to excel.
Yvette Baker Finals

Sunday 5th July was the final of the Yvette Baker Trophy - an inter-club competition specifically for juniors. Clubs from all over the country converged on Nottingham University for an afternoon of exciting racing in gorgeous sunshine. Unusually for the YBT final, it was an urban race so there were some very fast winning times.
Twenty nine juniors competed on behalf of SYO, including many of our new members. The winners were Devon, with LOC (Lakeland Orienteering Club) in 2nd and BOK (Bristol Orienteering Club) in 3rd one point behind. Our team was noticeably younger than many of the others but we finished in a creditable 11th place. Everyone acquitted themselves well against older, more experienced runners and really enjoyed the experience. Full results are available on the NOC website.
Well done in particular to the juniors whose scores counted for our 1st team:
Dominic Dakin - green men
Louise Adams - green women
Yasmin Field - light green women
Euan Tryner - orange men
Alex Elliot - orange women
Conrad Reuber - yellow men
Rachel Turner - yellow women
Imogen Pieters - yellow women
Naomi Thornton - yellow women

Great Turnout at Millhouses Park
There was a great turnout at Millhouses Park on Saturday with 250 runs, 67 of whom were new to orienteering. It was the penultimate event in this years Schools League so everyone was out to gain a few more points!
Preliminary results and splits are available from the event pageThere are also some photos on our Facebook page.
As ever a huge thanks to all the helpers, especially the parents of many of the kids who have started recently.

Last weekend saw more great results for SYO at the British Middle and Sprint Championships.
British Sprint Chamionships
Saturday's Sprint Event was held around Aldershot Garrison. Courses were well planned and led to fast and furious racing. It was also a chance to try Emit's new touch free punching. Well done to Rachael Rothman (W35) and Jenny Peel (W45) who triumphed in the A finals to become British Sprint Champions. There were also podium places for Bill Edwards (3rd M45) and Peter Gorvett (2nd M65).
British Middle Championships
Sunday's British Middle Championships were held at Park Wood, Bradenham & Naphill. The technical but runnable woodland was clearly suited to our members resulting in several podium positions. Congratulations to new British Champions Bill Edwards (M45), Tim Tett (M55), Rachael Rothman (W35) and Jenny Peel (W45). Aidan Smith (M20), Pete Tryner (M40), Charlie Adams (M50), Pete Gorvett (M65) & Pippa Dakin (W18) won silver; while Alex Rothman (M35) was awarded bronze.
