Podiums aplenty at the British Champs
Over the weekend of 26th & 27th March, a large contingent of SYO members travelled to Liphook to compete in the British Long and Relay Champs. The individual championships were held in glorious sunshine on Golden Valley & Cognor Woods. Courses were super tough, with a very hard uphill run in, and there were some very long times – all those who finished can be very proud! SYO qualify for Compass Sport Cup Final
SYO sailed comfortably through the Compass Sport Cup heat yesterday to secure a place in the final.
Despite a team hampered by illness and injury, 72 members competed on behalf of the club at Duncombe Park and Windy Pits. Well done to everyone who raced - even if you didn't count towards the SYO total, you still contributed by pushing down the scores of others and played a very important part in our victory! It was also really great to see 8 members counting for the first time in the Compass Sport competition.
We had a tremendous number of course winners; 11 in total, scoring the maximum 100 points - Oli, Pete T, Kim, Charlie, Amanda, Tim T, Alexandra, Euan, Alice, Maxwell and Brian. Well done also to the other scorers - Martin, Ciara, Hannah C, Paul N, Peter G, Jenny J, Colin S, Will P, Olmo, Mark C, Lotte, Andy, Anna and Paul B.
The final is on Sunday 16th October in Scotland. It will be hosted by FVO on Devilla, a decent forested area located between Edinburgh and Stirling. We will need a very strong team to successfully defend the trophy against FVO on home turf, so please put the date in your diary. The intention will be to book a coach and group accomodation to enable as many members to go as possible!
SYO's biggest medal haul
On Sunday 6th March more than 80 club members travelled to Rushmere Country Park for the British Middle Distance Championships. Participants enjoyed the lovely assembly arena and a chance to socialise with orienteering friends from around the country. Courses weren't particularly techinically challenging but the fast terrain certainly made any small errors costly and demanded quick accurate decision making and fast running. Clearly SYO excelled at this producing 24 medalists! Congratulations to the 7 British Champions: Beau (W10), Louis (M10), Maxwell (M12), Oscar (M14), Ella (W14), Imogen (W18) and Laura (W35). Well done also to the 11 silver medalists - Freddie (M12), Robbie (M14), Charlotte (W14), Freya (W16), Conrad (M16), Euan (M18), Peter (M75), Tim T (M60), Charlie (M55), Jenny P (W50) and Kim (W45); and the 5 bronze medalists - Alex (M10), Sophie (W12), Nick B (M45), Jenny J (W40) and Amanda (W50).
SYO celebrate 50th anniversary
SYO held 2 super days of racing this weekend to celebrate our 50th anniversary. For once the weather was kind to us and the sun shone throughout most of the weekend! Saturday’s event was held on Froggatt Edge & Big Moor, where competitors contended with steep rocky slopes and tussocky open moorland. Finishers were rewarded with stunning views across the peak district. It was the turn of Wharncliffe for Sunday’s event, where competitors faced even rockier (and rather bramble infested) slopes and a mix of more runnable woodland and open heathland giving very varied terrain. Alongside our 50th weekend, students from all other the country competed in the annual BUCs competition.
Winners of the 2 days combined, plus the first 3 in the junior classes, received fabulous 50th anniversary map towels to commemorate the event.
Congratulations to the following club members who were worthy recipients of these prizes:
M10 – Louis 1st, Jack W 2nd, Alex 3rd
W10 – Beau 1st, Lucy H 2nd
M12 – Freddie G 1st, Oskar 2nd, Stanley 3rd
W12 – Hannah 1st, Lucy W 2nd

As normal this weekend would not have been possible without the amazing efforts of all our volunteers. A huge thank you to everyone who helped over the weekend. However, a particular thank you must go to our major event officials – Louise Reynolds (organiser, Wharncliffe), Lucy Wiegand (organiser, Big Moor), Chris Williamson (planner Big Moor), Colin Drury (planner Wharncliffe), Kris Groom (assistant planner, Wharncliffe), John Britton (controller Big Moor), Paul Addison (controller Wharncliffe, Peter Gorvett (entries & assistant controller, Big Moor) and Ian Cooper (mapper).
5 British Night Champions for SYO!
The British Night Championships were held at Ilkley Moor on Saturday 19th February. Over 300 competitors braved the wintery conditions. Courses were very challenging and competitors had to contend with 2 inches of unexpected snow, but luckily the actual competition took place in the lull between storm Eunice and storm Franklin. The junior classes were particularly large as the event was attended by the Northern, Southern & Scottish Talent Squads.
There was an excellent turn out by SYO and some fabulous performances, with 12 members taking home a medal! Congratulations to SYO's 5 British Champions: Freya (W16), Amanda (W50), Euan (M18), Charlie (M55) and Peter (M75). Well done also to the 6 silver medallists - Immy (W18), Lucy (W50), Chris (M35), Nick B (M45), Martin (M55) and Tim (M60) and bronze medallist Richard (M50).
Thanks to Aire for a fabulous event and Wendy Carlyle for the super photos.
