The JK International Festival of Orienteering
A huge contingent of SYO members travelled to South Wales to enjoy the JK International Festival of Orienteering over the long Easter weekend. After a 2 year break due to Covid, more than 2000 orienteers from all over the country and abroad were hugely excited to be back competing at the JK and the glorious weather and great events made it a JK to remember!
The weekend kicked off with the JK sprint at Swansea University. SYO demonstrated their expertise in this discipline with 6 golds, 5 silvers and 4 bronzes. Congratulations to:
M10 – Louis Bryant (gold) & Alex Johnson(bronze)
W12 – Hannah Chapman (bronze)
M12 – Maxwell Groom (gold)
W14 – Ella Baxter (silver)
M14 – Robbie Lightfoot (gold)
W16 – Freya Tryner (bronze)

Special mention to Laura Robertson and Jonny Crickmore who both finished just outside the medals in the very competitive M & W21 Elite classes in 4th place.
Day 2 saw the action shift inland for the middle distance discipline at Clydach Terrace – a fast area of complex contours. A number of SYO competitors were in a strong position overnight with the medals to be decided following the long distance competition on the very physical area of Pwll Du. Competition in every class was incredibly tough and our 15 medallists deserve every accolade for their achievements over the 2 days of competition. Particular congratulations to our 6 JK Champions:
Louis Bryant (M10)
Ella Baxter (W14)
Euan Tryner (M18 Elite)
Laura Goy (W35)
Jenny Peel (W50)
Bill Edwards (M55)
Well done also to our 6 silver medallists: Robbie Lightfoot (M14), Nick Barrable (M45), Tim Tett (M60), Peter Gorvett (M75), Kim Baxter (W45) and Amanda Crawshaw (W50) and our 3 bronze medallists: Oskar Woods (M12), Anna Todd (W14) and Jenny Johnson (W40). Finally a special mention to Lucy Holt who was 1st in W10B!
On Easter Monday it was the turn of the relays at the Caerwent Military Training Area – a really unusual area of buildings and woodland, which was very fast and surprisingly tricky! The SYO black and yellow were out in force picking up 9 relay podiums. We lifted the trophy in 4 classes:
Senior Women – Jenny Johnson, Amanda Crawshaw & Jenny Peel
Veteran Men – Martin Ward, Charlie Adams & Tim Tett
Junior – Will Preston, Oskar Woods & Caspar Reynolds
Mini – Freddie Guy, Hannah Chapman & Maxwell Groom
While 5 teams finished runners up, taking silver medals:

Thanks to Richard Baxter for the photos. Next year’s JK is in the Lake District. Put the date in the diary…it’s an event not to be missed!
Our new Northern Champions
