COVID-19 Participant Code of Conduct
All participants must abide by the following code of conduct.
Government guidance takes precedence over this code of conduct. If government guidance changes at any time, it must be followed with immediate effect, including, if necessary, by stopping any orienteering activity.
Anyone orienteering using permanent or virtual courses, or taking part in club activities or events, must follow this guidance to ensure the safety of themselves, other participants, event volunteers and the general public.
It is essential that all participants adhere both to this code of conduct and any additional requirements set out by the organising club. These will form part of the club’s risk assessment for the activity, and maybe a result of restrictions imposed by landowners, local authorities or the government.
Personal safety must be the main driver for all decision making.
You must follow these rules when taking part in orienteering:
- Act as an ambassador for the sport of orienteering at all times. Consider how your actions may appear in the eyes of landowners or members of the public.
- DO NOT take part in any form of orienteering if you have any COVID-19 symptoms or are required to self-isolate under the current government guidance or been contacted by the NHS and asked to quarantine even if you are not displaying any symptoms.
- Ensure you have read and fully understood any information or instructions provided by a club before you arrive at an orienteering event.
- Observe social distancing requirements at all times, including – but not only – when travelling to a course, when you arrive, while on the course, and when you leave. Minimise, as far as possible, contact with others from outside your household before, during and after orienteering. Keep your distance from other participants and members of the public. Give way to other participants and members of the public on narrow paths and at gates or stiles.
- Be patient, courteous and respectful of others at all times.
Event Guidance (to be included when events are permitted)
Individuals should not enter an event if:
- They are unwell with a cough, fever or other respiratory symptoms
- If you or someone in your household or your support bubble is showing coronavirus symptoms, everyone in your support bubble should stay home. If you or a member of your support bubble is contacted as part of the test and trace programme, the individual contacted should stay at home. If that individual becomes symptomatic, everyone in the support bubble must then isolate.
- If they have returned from any overseas country (except for ROI or one of the exempted countries identified by the government) until they have completed the self-quarantine period for 14 days, even if they are symptom-free
- If they are undergoing COVID-19 testing, until they have received negative test results and are symptom-free
- If they have been advised to stay at home by a health professional.
We also advise competitors who fit within the higher at risk groups to take particular care and/or make decisions on attendance with due consideration to the risks associated with COVID-19.
- Ensure you have read and fully understood any information or instructions provided by the organising club before you arrive at an event.
- Follow any requirements imposed by the organising club, either in advance or on the day of the event. Enter events in advance. Respect any limit that a club places on the number of entries – this is vital to enable the event to take place safely.
- Only share transport to an event with other members of your household.
- Arrive at an event during the time window that you have been allocated by the organising club.
- Observe social distancing requirements at all times at an event, including – but not only –
- when you arrive, at registration,
- while on the course,
- at download, and
- when you leave.
- Minimise, as far as possible, contact with others from outside your household before, during and after the race.
- Keep your distance from other participants and members of the public when waiting to start, on the course, and at the finish.
- Move quickly away from controls after you have punched – do not stand next to a control looking at your map to work out your route to the next control.
- Give way to members of the public on narrow paths and at gates or stiles.
- After finishing a course, move away from the finish, allow yourself to recover (e.g. by catching your breath and reducing your rate of perspiration), and then move swiftly through download and to your vehicle.
- Do not congregate in groups at an event.
- Be patient, courteous and respectful of others at all times. Do anything that a club volunteer asks you to do – their request may be necessary to comply with rules put in place to enable the event to take place.

Coaching Webinars - Mon
As we are unable to run clubnight at the moment, we thought we'd put together a series of 3 webinars presenting the latest ideas on orienteering processes. The sessions are suitable for coaches, parents (so you can help your kids) and orienteers of all ages and abilities.
The sessions will run for 3 consecutive Mondays, starting Monday 18th January at 7.30pm. The sessions will be led by Nick Lightfoot.
{slider title="More details..." open="false" class="icon"}
Nick says, "The presentations are broadly in line with current mainstream coaching but include many of my own ideas based on 35 years coaching at all levels from schools' teams through to senior international athletes. Whether you’re a beginner or an old hack like me, the aim is to challenge you to think about how you compete, coach or practice orienteering, with something new for everyone, I hope!"
The format will be an initial presentation of 30-40 mins with follow up discussion. The sessions will be best viewed as a series but each session can be watched on its own. The basic principles introduced in the first week apply to all levels but we'll be using orange and yellow legs as examples. In the second week we'll re-iterate the main principles but explain more about why they’re important and use TD4 and TD5 examples. Session 3 looks at applying the principles to competitions.

Online Circuits - Thur
Every Thursday from 7 - 8pm. The hour-long session is suitable for all and will be led by Mary Fleming, who is a qualified personal trainer.

Challenges & Puzzles
Check out this whole other section of the hub, bursting with Challenges and Puzzles for you to have a go at - the majority of which have been created by SYO members.
Orienteering Unlocked
Real orienteering was cancelled. So Chris Smithard and his team wanted to create an orienteering challenge anyone could take part in from their home. Hence Orienteering Unlocked (originally Lockdown Orienteering) was born. A series of challenges to test your orienteering skills and knowledge against people from anywhere in the world whilst we waited for real orienteering to return.
There's now been several competitions, and lots of SYO members have taken part in each one. Check out their website for loads more info and entries to their forthcoming events.
Turf
There's a new craze sweeping the SYO Orienteering community - turfing!
It’s an online game that you play using an app on a smartphone. It’s a bit like MapRun, but you get to choose your course, and it’s infinitely variable. You can see where the turf zones are when you start up the app (available on google play or apple store), and you simply take the zones by going to them. This earns you points, and the aim is to get as many points as possible each month, by taking zones and re-taking them when someone else takes them from you.
Turf-O - the ultimate blend! Check out our Urban Orienteering courses that visit Turf zones!
{slider title="Read more..." open="false" class="icon"}
As in most online games, there are many additional challenges to earn medals, e.g. visiting 10 zones in as short a time as possible; visiting more than 50 zones in a day; visiting a zone every hour for 12 hours.
You can use Turf for training by deciding on a particular route and then running round. It’s great for practising map memory, or for refining your decision-making for score events. Or you can just go for a gentle walk and take some zones on the way or race round on a bike and pick up loads of zones in one go. There are lots of zones in and around Sheffield.
Visit the Turf website to find out more. There was also an article in the previous issue of CompassSport magazine.
Nigel has set up an SYO league - there's only a few of us so far but we'd like lots more members to join.

Streetview O
There's now a lot of different Streetview Orienteering Courses available online from various sources, including one in Venice by our own Nick L, which is the perfect antidote to social distancing – charging down crowded alleyways and running straight through startled pedestrians. Best accompanied by a pizza or glass of Chianti!

Folder of Sample Maps and Courses |
Thank you to Ryan for planning the sample courses, available in the folder linked above. They are planned to be the right length, so give a good idea of how the area might be used, particularly with the spectator loops near the end in the school grounds on all courses. There are additional notes about the map on the sample maps.
PLEASE DO NOT PRINT ANY OF THESE MAPS TO BRING TO THE COMPETITION - it looks bad :)

Travel & Coach Details
It's a grand day out this time, and we'll be hiring a coach to transport juniors and parents. The coach will be leaving Sheffield (Brocco Bank) at 7:30am and returning around 7pm. The journey time is approx. 2hr 30min, so it may be that some families prefer to make their own way down to Sandringham. The Google Entry Form asks for your travel preference - Own Transport, Coach or Flexible (depends upon spaces on coach).
Juniors Y6 and below will need to be accompanied on the coach by a parent or nominated adult. Y7 and above may travel unacompanied, although other family members are very welcome, subject to seat availability.
Each coach seat will be at a subsidised cost of £10.
Any questions, please get in touch with
Check out the YBT Trophy in our Virtual Trophy Cabinet on the Junior Page!
Entering
Please sign up via this Google Form to enter for the YBT courses (Juniors only).
In addition to the YBT courses, there are open colour coded courses for parents and younger children to run. WAOC recommends pre-entry for Yellow to Blue courses on Fabian4, White is Entry on Day only. Enter on Fabian4
Which Course?
Juniors should opt to run whatever course they feel comfortabe running - subject to a few restrictions (see table). Those on the Yellow course can choose to run in pairs. Note that in the Final you can run a different course from the Heat, and you can run in the Final even if you didn't compete at the Heat.
Payment
Upon completion of the entry form, you will be asked to pay. Please do make the transfer at this point - it makes the admin a lot easier for us! The cost of the YBT entry is £6, and SYO Junior Funds (from cake stalls etc.) will meet half of this cost. (No subsidy will be given to juniors who fail to turn up on the day)
The amount payable is £3 per YBT Junior (entry fee), and £10 per Coach Seat (if opted for flexible, no need to pay at this stage)
The Bank Details are: Sort Code 40-41-07 ~ A/C Number 21115189 ~ Reference YBT & junior's surname
