Details

Provisional results, Routegadget, ranking points and Winsplits available above.   Green course results and ranking points updated Monday.  Note that many of the juniors had two runs; first runs have school name in the club field, second runs have orienteering club or are blank.  School competition results are in Other above.

As the school information is not visible on Fabian4, the final pre-entry list is visible in start list above.  It is sorted by firstname within course.  The time shown there is the start of the 14 minute start block selected during the entry process.

SYO are delighted to be hosting a regional orienteering event, which incorporates the Yorkshire Schools Champs, in the lovely runnable ancient woodland of Sandall Beat.  The area has very little undergrowth, an intricate ditch network, tricky vegetation and many paths. It is ideal for newcomers and younger juniors but will also offer a good level of challenge to experienced orienteers. The area has been newly extended to incorporate Armthorpe Park, which will be visited by the longer courses.

Course Notes

You can run any course you like. The orange course is a good place for adult beginners to start. Families might want to start on yellow.

Longer courses have a timed-out crossing of a railway bridge, both ways for some courses.  Members of the public may be encountered carrying prams or cycles over the bridge; the timing-out means you can allow time to manoeuvre.

The Brown, Blue and Short Blue continue through Armthorpe Park and a small urban area, returning to the woods through a horse pasture. The Right of Way runs close to the fence, the remainder of the field is marked out of bounds. These courses are for those aged over 16 due to road crossings. Metal studded shoes are not recommended for these courses.

Short green is aimed at older competitors and is physically less demanding than the other technically difficult courses.Short blue is for those competitors that want to venture to the new extension but don't want to go as far as blue or brown.

Loose control descriptions will be available in the start lanes for all courses. White, yellow & orange are written; all other courses are pictoral.

Yorkshire Schools Champs

Pupils wishing to be competitive in the Yorkshire Schools Champs should enter the course relevant to their school year as detailed in the table above, although it is permitted for pupils to run up.

Pupils can compete in pairs or individually in classes B3/G3 to B8/G8. Shadowing is not permitted. Pupils within the same school on the same class must start 4 minutes apart.

The link to the rules can be found here.

Timings

Registration 10am-12 noon

Facilities

Toilets, enquiries, SI hire, registration & download are adjacent to parking. The start / finish are very close by. Spectators are encouraged to cheer in Yorkshire Champs competitors on the run in to the finish.

Terrain

Sandall Beat is a flat, runnable mixed woodland with a network of ditches and complex vegetation. The wood is a local nature reserve and has been designated a SSSI for it's rich and varied wildlife, especially it's insects. Armthorpe Park is mostly rounded open terrain with woodland containing some navigational features.  The return route through Pit Top Park has a park in an urban area and a small woodland adjacent to a right of way, generally flat.

Map

Sandall Beat map extract

1:5000 & 1:7500 map (symbols to ISOM 2017-2).

Map extended in 2022/23 by Henry Marston and Ian Cooper to include Armthorpe Park, a reclaimed coal spoil tip, and Pit Top Park, a new urban area. Printed on waterproof paper by Hassall and Lucking.

Mapping notes

Green X = large tree stump, the standing trunk of a former 417 Significant Tree (Green O)

Black O = play equipment

Hides, seats, benches and power lines are not shown on the map.

The symbol 418, Prominent bush or tree (small green circle with central white spot, smaller than symbol 417 Significant Tree) is a bush or bushy tree in the woods, a small tree with distinct trunk in open land)

Ditches range from shallow depressed lines, rarely containing water and marked with a line of brown dots (small erosion gully) through dashed, narrow and wide blue lines for ditches of increasing depth and likelihood to contain water (depending on the weather). They are in the main easy and safe to cross, with care.  The deepest sections of ditch are mapped as an uncrossable watercourse – not to be crossed. The crossability of the main north-south drainage ditch is variable and courses have been planned to make use of the best crossing points which are marked with the crossing point symbol on the map or shown as a path or road.  It is permitted to cross this ditch elsewhere, taking care especially if it contains water.  If conditions on the day show that this ditch is unsafe to cross except at marked crossing points, blank maps in the start lane will highlight the safer crossing points shown on the map.

Results

Provisional results will be on display at download and live results available on-line.  Final results will be posted on the SYO website as soon as possible after the event.
