Details
What a great start to this year's Saturday Series! 426 runs, 890km of orienteering (if everyone went in a straight line and found all the controls!), 194 hours worth of running, 5522 controls punched...
Provisional results are available on the link above, we need to go over them and make sure everyone is allocated to the correct school etc. Individual Schools results are available on the 'Other' link above and team results are below - we have had to guess a few of the schools for this year's Y7s. If you spot any errors then please
I hope you enjoyed James' courses, he started orienteering at the Saturday series a few years ago and it is great to see him progressing - he attended the GB M/W16 training camp in Scotland in the summer and will be representing England in the home internationals this Autumn, thanks also to the rest of the family who James and his brother have dragged into the sport!
A huge thankyou as well to all of our wonderful helpers, running an event for over 400 people is no easy task and it would be impossible without everyone who volunteers.
It was brilliant to see over 100 newcomers, I hope you enjoyed your first taste of orienteering. You will find the course results on the 'Results' link above and leg splits on the 'Splits' link. We had a lot of people on the White and Yellow course who ran past the last control, after discussions we have decided to reinstate everyone that missed this as it is the first race of the season and with the finish in sight many just ran straight past it. We also had a few that didn't punch the start or finish so we have estimated times for that.
You may also notice that there are a number of people marked as NC in the results (Non-competitive) as orienteering is a sport that combines both navigation and running only your first run on a course can count in the league etc. For this reason you should also run your competition course first. We encourage everyone to go out as many times as you would like but it is always better to challenge yourself on another course rather than running the same course again.
We did have one accident out on the Yellow course today with someone taking a tumble down a steep hill between 3 and 4 having picked a slightly adventurous route. It is a reminder that unlike many sports you are free to choose your own route, which for many is the appeal of the sport. Parents are always welcome to shadow their children, especially when they are new to the sport.
Just three items of lost property: an unbrella, hoody and fleece. Please
The next Saturday Series event is on 1st October at Bolehills Park, we do hold other events so check the What's On section of the website.

Information
All at South Yorkshire Orienteers are deeply saddened by the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and we remember with affection and gratitude her lifetime of service. We have been advised by the DCMS and British Orienteering that all club events and activities can continue as planned and therefore the orienteering at Endcliffe tomorrow will go ahead.
This is the first event in our 2022/23 Sheffield Saturday Series of 9 events. These events are perfect for introducing new people to the sport and also provide good value, local orienteering opportunities to experienced orienteers. The series also incorporates the very popular SFSS schools' league.
There are a choice of 6 different courses catering to all ages and abilities. Longer courses extend into Bingham Park and Whiteley Woods. Individuals, pairs and groups all welcome.

Orienteering Courses Available
If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.
See below for details on the courses on offer. Distances are provisional:
Course | School Years | Distance | Technical Level | Who is it for? |
White |
Y4,5 |
1.2 km | 1 | The easiest course and a great place for children to start. The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point. Year 3 pupils can compete with Y4s. |
Yellow | Y6,7 | 1.7km | 2 | The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start. The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc. It will also no longer have a control everytime you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls |
Orange | Y8,9 | 2.4km | 3 |
Harder still, the Orange course introduces:
|
Light Green | Y10+ | 3.4km | 4 |
Ideal for improvers. The course is further and the navigation difficulty increases and you start to use simple contours and point features. |
Green | Adult | 4.3km | 5 |
Navigationally as hard as the area allows with plenty of route choice. |
Blue |
Adult | 5.6km | 5 | As per the green but further in distance. |
Safety & risk
A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.
