Information

The 2022 British Schools Orienteering Championships will be staged at Graves Park, Sheffield.  Graves Park is Sheffield’s largest park and provides a wide variety of orienteering terrain.  As well as a good path network and open spaces, there are wooded valleys, steepening at the west, with old mineral workings providing a small area of interesting contour detail. There is also a cafe, playground and rare-breeds animal farm to entertain non-orienteers! We hope you will join us for an exciting day of competition.

Who can take part?

The event is for pupils in years 5 to 13. Pupils younger than year 5 can enter as long as they are competent on white courses. Schools do not have to be members of the British Schools Orienteering Association to enter. It is not necessary for a member of the school staff to accompany the team, but the team must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Entries from individuals are also welcomed, as are home-schooled children. Competitors should have competed in at least three orienteering events at the appropriate standard before the Schools Championships.

Entries

There is a spreadsheet for you to complete to enter your team. Visit www.bsoa.org to download the entry details and entry spreadsheet. Click here for direct link. To enter BSOC you need to download it, complete it, save it such that your school name appears in the file name, then email it to This email address is being protected from spambots. Parking, Assembly, Facilities, Finish and Starts

Vehicles will be parked on hard standing in car parks approximately 10-20 minutes walk from the Assembly/Finish area.

Toilets, enquiries, download, results, etc. will all be in the Assembly area, adjacent to the Graves Park Pavillion. Starts are within sight of Assembly.

Map and Terrain

The Graves Park map has been resurveyed by Ian Cooper (SYO) through 2022 and is drawn at 1:5000 scale. Contours are at 5 metre intervals.

The area includes a valley running broadly east-west. It is a mixture of open parkland (much of the longer grass has recently been cut) and wooded areas, some of which are steep and can be slippery when wet. There are many paved and unpaved footpaths across the area.

An extract of the map is below.

 Map Extract BSOC

  • Tarmac paths are shown by the brown path symbol. Other footpaths are shown by black dashed lines.
  • Significant/prominent trees are shown on the map but not smaller trees, or young and staked trees.
  • There is a stream running down the main valley. The stream is out of bounds for ecological reasons and may only be crossed on the paved footpaths.

Control Descriptions

Control descriptions will be printed on the map. There will be no loose descriptions.

Equipment Required

Personal gear needs to be Orienteering kit or a T-shirt or long sleeved shirt, tracksuit bottoms and trainers (or good grip soled shoes).  No Shorts or Jeans. If the weather is bad then cagoules may be made compulsory.

The area is likely to be muddy.

A compass is strongly recommended, and whistles are compulsory.

SI Control Punching

The SI electronic punching system will be used. Competitors may use their own SI Card but this must be indicated on the entry form and the SI card used must match the card number shown on their competitor number label. If not, enquiries must be notified and any changes made before the competitor starts. In the interests of fairness the ability to punch "contactlessly" with your own SI card (i.e. active SIAC) will be disabled.

Awards

Medals will be given to the first three individuals in each age class, the first three teams (of three) in each age class, and the first three schools in each category of school.

Participation Certificates will be awarded to all competitors.

Trophies

Trophies will be presented to the winning school for each age class and the winning school in each category of school. If you hold a trophy from BSOC 2021 please return it to enquiries as soon as you arrive at the event.

Timings and Prize Giving

The intended start period is from 11.00am to 1pm.

Prize giving will take place as early as possible, but provisionally should be at around 2 pm, in the Assembly Area.

Dogs

Dogs are welcome providing they are kept on a lead in the Assembly Area.

Saturday Training event

There will a training event at Canklow, Rotherham 1pm-3pm. Cost £2 per person. Details to follow.
