Results up.  Routegadget is now up, but but some sort of problem with the map has meant georeferencing is not accurate and autofit doesn’t seem to be working.

Organisers Comments

Thank you all for joining us in this year’s Sheffield City race a few weeks earlier than originally scheduled so thank you to the YHOA clubs for letting us move it forward. I hope you all enjoyed Colin’s Courses. Thank you to my amazing helpers who volunteered their time to enable the event to go ahead. It’s always hard when there is a distance between assembly and the Adult Courses start to gauge how things are all going, I know the junior start were busy playing football for some periods of the event and still managed to set those on the yellow and light green off in their courses. But I think it went smoothly, thank you all for safely crossing the dual carriageway (I hope you all used your 3 minutes wisely).  For the juniors there was a small error in one control’s location but thanks to their prompt informing of this mistake the control was relocated to its correct position.

Apologies to those running later who couldn’t find control 49 and a special thanks to Stephen Reynolds for sourcing it from some overzealous Student Hall of Residence Security guard who had been concerned it was a suspicious timing device and had taken it into the building! You may have noticed Clive and Colin were located at the Magistrates court as the original control location had fallen foul of the security guard on duty who said it was not allowed to be there. Clive has checked the area out on previous Saturdays during the competition time and no one was present, I hope this didn’t spoil anyone’s runs and you enjoyed their greetings.

Orienteering needs it helpers and volunteers, I was fortunate to have so many offers of help not just from SYO members. The success of the day is down to them so thank you all.

Controllers Comments

I hope you all enjoyed your runs at today's Sheffield City Race. It was put together at very short notice after Susan saved the event by volunteering to be the Organiser. I thought Colin planned some good courses with plenty of route choices. I was away for 10 days just before the event so thanks to Peter Gorvett for acting as assistant controller in my absence. Thanks also to Peter for helping out with the OCAD / CONDES issues.

There were a few issues on the day but I hope these didn't affect things too badly. Control 42 at the Magistrates' Court was a problem as an over zealous Security officer objected to us using the planned control site - hence the manned control 30 meters south instead. Control 67 on Yellow and Light Green was hung incorrectly by me but corrected quickly - apologies for this. Control 49 was removed very late in the day by another Security officer but retrieved and reinstated by a competitor - many thanks for this. The map also had a few inaccuracies - part and parcel of being in a constantly changing urban environment.

I thought the organisation ran smoothly - thanks to everyone involved here - and comments seemed generally favourable. And the rain held off!!

Planners Comments

I hope you enjoyed your coures on the north side of Sheffield city centre. I believe the courses had a good mix starting with the streets of trendy Kelham Island and ending with the complex housing around the Ponderosa.

As per Clive comments we had a problem with a number of controls. While 67 was clearly on the wrong path junction we thought the area in front of the magistrates court was public access. The comprise of a human control 42 seems to work well.

Thanks to Susan for organising and to her team of helpers including those who collected controls. Thanks to Clive supported by Peter for the supportive controlling. Most of all thanks to all of you for participating which together with your positive comments on my courses made all my work worthwhile.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. Photography

SYO has an agreed policy on the taking of photographs at events, based on national guidance. This provides a sensible balance between the benefits and risks associated with the taking and use of images. If you are unsure about acceptable practice, please speak to the event organiser. Read our photography policy.

Privacy

When entering our events your personal details (name, gender, age class & club) will appear in the results section of this website. Read our privacy policy to see how we look after your personal data.

Venue

Ponderosa is a smallish area of parkland across the road from Crookes Valley Park.  The shortest courses will normally stay within the parkland, but the surrounding area includes interesting estates with intricate alleys and inner city parkland, which provides an excellent urban orienteering challenge.
