Join us for an exciting middle distance race at Bowden Housteads. Experienced orienteers will enjoy the mix of runnable ancient woodland and open areas with their contour and vegetation detail, while the network of paths caters well to newcomers and younger juniors.
Location
Car parking and registration at Davy Sports Club, 630 Prince of Wales Rd, Sheffield, S9 4ER.
Directions
From M1 J33, take A630 towards Sheffield. After 2.5 right at roundabout onto B6200 towards Darnall. Left at traffic lights onto A6102 Prince of Wales Road. After 0.4 mile turn left into Davy Sports. (entrance is easy to miss, so slow down) Prince of Wales Rd is a duel carrigeway, entry only possible from the direction of Darnall. Exit will be the opposiite way towards the A630.
Assembly
Excellent indoor assembly area at the Davy Sports Club. Registration, download etc upstairs (Enter through main entrance, up spiral staircase and through the bar to the rear). Light refreshments available at the bar (drinks, soup etc) Toilets / changing rooms available on ground floor. Please remove muddy shoes before entering.

Terrain
These ancient woodlands are split by the A57 and A630 into 3 parts joined by footbridges. The woods have a variety of trees dominated by Oak and Beech and are crossed by several streams, notably Car Brook which runs N-S. It also has a number of rough open areas. There is a good track and path network including part of the Trans-Pennine Trail.

Courses
Choice of 9 courses:
Black, Brown, Blue, Green, Short Green - technically difficult. decreasing in length from black to short green.
Light Green - fairly difficult.
Orange - medium difficuly. Good for adult newcomers.
Yellow - easy. Good place for teenagers to start.
White - Very easy. Good for young juniors.
As a middle distance race, expected winning times are 30-35 minutes.

Start / Finish
500m along a footpath by main road, then into estate with one small road crossing. Return from finish by same route.
Additional Safety Info
The area is used by dog-walkers, horse-riders, etc. In the event of anyone approaching you on a path during the event, please give them a wide berth.

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.

Venue
Runnable deciduous woodland and a variety of open and semi-open areas. Several stream valleys provide contour detail. It is split into three parts by the Sheffield Parkway and A57, but footbridges mean this doesn't have a negative impact on course planning. Map resurveyed and updated to ISOM 2017-2 by Ian Cooper in 2019.
