Middle Distance Event

Organiser (pre event) comments - Mark Chapman

I write this from Norway the night before the race. I am so grateful that Amanda has stepped into my shoes to deliver the all important day itslelf. I volunteered many moons ago and then found out it was half-term and I will be on a family holiday. It's been fun organising but also it had it's up and downs. On Wednesday evening, Amanda sent me emails of the construction by the arena. Not only had they started but they had also moved the boundary of the construction into my assembly arena and left piles of fencing in the arena. Step forward Jacky Dakin who was able to attend site first the next morning and on my behalf speak to the construction manager to ensure we had enough space and the fencing was removed. So hopefully the small arena did it's job. I am sure on a winters day it was nice to have hard standing parking and start, finish & assembly all adjacent. Thanks to Dave Peel for his courses which I have never seen and for Ian Watson from MDOC for controlling. I hope all went well on the day. I also need to thank my permissions officer, Lucy Weigand, for all her hard work getting the land permissions. She did tell me they would start work this week but I had been told they were due to start at our last event here. Fortunately, Lucy persuaded Dave and I to move the finish from the construction site!

What made my life so easy organising this event is the help from the Team Leaders; Car parking (Bill Hanley), Enquiries/registration (Jacky Dakin), Start (Neil Sprot) and SI/Website (Martin Ward). If I organise another event this would be my dream team. I was able to rely and count on their experience to deliver. Many thanks to them and also many thanks to all the SYO helpers. Great job Team SYO.

Organiser (on the day) comments - Amanda Crawshaw

I've always said that on the day of a well organised event the organiser should have very little to do... Mark, Dave and Ian had done a meticulous job. The team leaders were all fully prepared and took control of their bit on the day. The weather was kind and the courses well received. Thanks to all the helpers for their efforts and the competitors for making it such an enjoyable day. Special thanks to the Dakins for saving me a trip back to the garage!

Controller - Ian Watson (MDOC)

Dave made excellent use of the area. Tankersley is interesting but limited by being fairly narrow so the courses needed lots of crossing over. I heard a couple of tales of people following the wrong line but accepted it was their fault. As Mark mentions, there were a few problems running up to the event but they were all tackled with minimal fuss. Thanks to Dave, Mark, Amanda and the whole of the highly efficient SYO team for making my job very easy.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. Venue

Tankersley Woods has a rich industrial heritage and once contained factories and railways during the war when it was heavily bombed. It now contains a wealth of detail with many bell pits, bomb craters and myriad of paths created by local people spread across mixed vegetation comprising natural oak woodland with bluebells through reclaimed spoil heaps with maturing shrubs and young trees.

The area has been worked for coal and iron, which has left complex slopes covered by the scars of hand-hewn "bell-pits" and other earth-works from the 19th century and before. These days the area is used by dog-walkers, cyclists and trail-bikers, leaving a large number of paths. In the most active biking areas the path network is very complex. The mapping of these paths is good, but small new paths can be created quickly.

There are brambles in parts of the area, but most are at ankle-length, are pretty runnable and have no bramble screen. There are some areas of thicker brambles in the far south of the map.
