Another beautiful if cold day, we are being very lucky with the weather this year!  You can see preliminary results using the link above and also split times so you can see where you lost those vital seconds.  You can also see the year group results using the results above. The school team results are below.As usual if you see any spelling mistakes, incorrect years, schools etc. please let me know.  Hopefully we will have finalised results soon.

Thanks to all the staff at the Centre in the Park for all their help.  It makes organising a whole lot easier, they do a mean bacon butty as well!

Finally a huge thank you to everyone who helped today,  without all their efforts the event could not have taken place.

The next schools event is not until the New Year - 23 Jan in Ecclesall Woods.  There are plenty of opportunities to get your fix of orienteering before Christmas though:

• On Sun 6th Dec we have an event at Warncliffe, start times from 10:30 - 12:30. (See Details)
• We also have coaching in another section of Ecclesall Woods on 12 Dec from 1 - 3pm, you must let Pauline know in advance if you are going to attend this (See Details)

Event Information

The third event in the Saturday series, aimed at beginners but with courses for the experienced as well. It also includes the third event in the Sheffield Schools Orienteering League. The orienteering is suitable for all ages and abilities.

Norfolk Park is close to the centre of Sheffield. We will be based at the Centre in the Park (here). The park also boasts a pretty good adventure playground...

There is a car park off Guilford Avenue, with further parking on the road itself.  By Tram the nearest tram stop is Arbourthorne Road. There is a five minute walk from the tram stop to the Centre in the Park. Registration will be in the centre with the start and finish near by. The centre has a cafe.

Registration for courses will open at 1pm.  You can start any time from 1pm - 3pm but the courses close at 3:30pm.

Schools Event

Running alongside the public event is the third event in the Sheffield School Orienteering League for both Primary and Secondary pupils.  Entry to the schools event is free if your school is a member of the Sheffield Federation of School Sports (SFSS).  Information about the SFSS Orienteering League is here.  It is not necessary for a teacher to be present from the school.

Entries

All courses are entry on the day.  You just have to turn up, pick a course and fill in an entry form.  There will be people on hand to help you if you have any questions.

If you ran one of the previous schools events in the series then you should have completed an entry form an been given a number.  With the number we are able to add you into the results system much quicker.  You can download an entry form with your details on from the registration page using the registration number and email address.

If this will be the first event you have attended this year then please go the the registration page and enter your details.  If you don't get chance to do this before the event then you can still register at the event.

REGISTRATION PAGE

For those who would like to do a second run you will need to complete another entry slip with the same details as before.  You are welcome to fill this out in advance and bring it with you when you download (with the £1 entry fee for the second course) and we can give you a map to save queuing again.

Costs

Adults £4, £3 for club members

Children £2.  Children running a schools courses whose school is a member of the SFSS are free.

Any additional courses will cost an additional £1

If you would like to go around in a group you would just pay for one entry.

Orienteering Courses Available

If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.

At an orienteering event there are a range of different courses to try, depending on your navigation experience, age, fitness etc.  You can pretty much garantee that there will be a course that will suit you!  The courses are colour coded and at different events a course with a particular colour, e.g. Yellow, should be similar both in difficulty and distance.

White	Y4,5	1.5km	1	The easiest course and a great place for children to start.  The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point.
Yellow	Y6,7	1.8km	2	The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start.  The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc. It will also no longer have a control everytime you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls. Because of the park setting there will be some controls that do not follow line feature.  Instead they will be on a point feature (e.g. a tree) but close by.  By turning the map so that it matches the ground you will be able to see the next control to go to.
Orange	Y8,9	2.6km	3	Harder still, the Orange course introduces: Choosing routes - e.g. should I go round the paths to the left or right Using 'Point Features' as control sites Basic use of a compass
Long Orange	Y10+	3.2km	3	Similar difficulty to orange but longer. Please note that the course is in two parts.  You complete the first part before turning the map over to part 2
Light Green		4.1km	3	Harder still the Light Green uses more controls off paths etc.
Map Memory		2.6km	4	Experienced orienteers or someone up for a challenge!  Rather than carrying a map each control has a map extract that shows the location of the next control.  You have to figure out the route and then run to the next control.  If you lose your way you have no option but to retrace your steps back to the last control and try again.
