I have to say a massive thank you to all our volunteers on the day for their hard work, without which the event could not have taken place. We look forward to seeing you at the next Saturday event - 29th Nov at Norfolk Park - Registration will be in the centre so no waiting around in the cold.

Event Information
The second event in the Saturday series, aimed at beginners but with courses for the experienced as well. It also includes the second event in the Sheffield Schools Orienteering League.
Weston Park is close to the centre of sheffied, next to the University and Childrens Hospital. The Weston Park Museum has lots of great exhibits. We will be based outside the museum, close to the main entrance. The orienteerig is suitable for all ages and abilities.
The museum is here. Parking will be on surrounding streets, Mushroom Lane and Northumberland Road west of the A57 are good places to try, the museum website indicates that the Sheffield University car parks at Durham Road and the Arts Tower are free at weekends . The nearest bus stop is served by the 51 and 52 very regularly from the centre of Sheffield.
Registration for courses will open at 1pm. You can start any time from 1pm - 3pm but the courses close at 3:30pm.
Schools Event
Running alongside the public event is the first event in the Sheffield School Orienteering League for both Primary and Secondary pupils. Entry to the schools event is free if your school is a member of the Sheffield Federation of School Sports (SFSS). Information about the SFSS Orienteering League is here. It is not necessary for a teacher to be present from the school.
If you attended the first event in the league at Endcliffe Park you can download an entry form with your details on from the registration page. If this will be the first event you have attended this year then please go the the registration page and enter your details. If you don't get chance to do this before Saturday then you can still register at the event.
Orienteering Courses Available
If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.
At an orienteering event there are a range of different courses to try, depending on your navigation experience, age, fitness etc. You can pretty much garantee that there will be a course that will suit you! The courses are colour coded and at different events a course with a particular colour, e.g. Yellow, should be similar both in difficulty and distance.
For longer courses the grading will be slightly diffferent to the other events in the series so far because we will be using the University buildings etc. This is called 'Urban Orienteering'. So instead of a Light Green we have a Long course and an 'Extra Urban'.
At Weston Park, the White, Yellow will all stay within the park boundaries. The Orange and Long courses will use the university building immediately next to the park, you will not need to cross any roads. The Extra Urban course will use the underpass to cross the A57 to more of the University and will also cross Mushroom Lane, the small road by the side of the park, to access Crookes Valley Park.
If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.
Course | School Year | Distance | Technical Level | Who is it for? |
White | Y4,5 | 0.8km | 1 | The easiest course and a great place for children to start. The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point. |
Yellow | Y6,7 | 1.1km | 2 |
The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start. The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc. Because of the park setting there will be some controls that do not follow line feature. Instead they will be on a point feature (e.g. a tree) but close by. By turning the map so that it matches the ground you will be able to see the next control to go to. |
Orange | Y8,9 | 1.9km | 3 |
Harder still, the Orange course introduces:
To make things clearer on the map the course will be in 2 parts. The first part will be on one side, once you get to the last control on the first part, turn the map over to continue on the second part |
Long Orange | Y10+ | 3.1km | 3 |
Ideal for improvers. Decision making becomes important with the Urban orienteering, picking the shortest routes between controls that don't take you down dead ends and uncrossable walls. To make things clearer on the map the course will be in 2 parts. The first part will be on one side, once you get to the last control on the first part, turn the map over to continue on the second part |
Urban Extra | 2.0km | 3 |
Using Crookes Valley Park and part of the University south of the A57 (YOU MUST USE THE UNDERPASS TO CROSS THE A57). |
|
Map Memory | 1.9km | 4 |
Experienced orienteers or someone up for a challenge! Rather than carrying a map each control has a map extract that shows the location of the next control. You have to figure out the route and then run to the next control. If you lose your way you have no option but to retrace your steps back to the last control and try again.

Venue
Weston Park is 5-hectare traditional park very near the City Centre. Events there usually have courses that extend into Crookes Valley Park to the NW and around the buildings and grounds of Sheffield University Main Campus. The combination of complex urban terrain and runnable parkland makes for entertaining orienteering. The Weston Park Museum in one corner is an interesting family-friendly museum.
