Another great turnout today, over 300 runs which made our registration and results teams work pretty frantically!  I hope you will agree that they did a tremendous job.

We would like to get an article in the Grassroots section of the Star but need some good action photos.  All the volunteers were too busy on the day so if you have any that we could use then please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. provided your are happy for us to use them in an article and on the website.

The results at this stage provisional, we have updated a number of spelling mistakes, age group or gender changes etc.  The latest results are available via the link above.  School Team results are below. Please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. if your result is missing or if there are any miss-spellings, wrong ages, school etc.  There are a number of results that didn't match up during download and we just added your name to the entry, we will go back over them in the next couple of days and add the rest of the details.  Split times are available above so you can see how you got on for each leg. The 'Other' link will take you to year group results.  The current standings for the year are on the schools page.

I have to say a massive thank you to all our volunteers.  Without their help event could not have taken place.  If anyone is able to help out at future event please let us know as that will give the others an opportunity to swap during the event to get a run.

The next schools event is at Forge Dam on 7 Feb.  But there are plenty more orienteering opportunities before then.  The coaching starts next Saturday afternoon in Endcliffe Park, details are on our home page.  PLEASE LET PAULINE KNOW IN ADVANCE IF YOU ARE COMING!

For those wanting an immediate O fix, our neighbouring club, Derwent Valley Orienteers (DVO) are holding an event tomorrow (18th Jan) at Chrich Chase, information here.  We have an event in two weeks time with a Night Event on Saturday 31 Jan and a Day event on Sunday 1 Feb, both at Ramsley Moor between Owler Bar and Baslow.  See the events list at the top of our home page.

Entries

All courses are entry on the day.  You just have to turn up, pick a course and fill in an entry form.  There will be people on hand to help you if you have any questions.

If you ran one of the previous schools events in the series then you should have completed an entry form an been given a number. With the number we are able to add you into the results system much quicker.  You can download an entry form with your details on from the registration page using the registration number and email address.

If this will be the first event you have attended this year then please go the the registration page and enter your details.  If you don't get chance to do this before the event then you can still register at the event.  REGISTRATION PAGE

For those who would like to do a second run you will need to complete another entry slip with the same details as before.  You are welcome to fill this out in advance and bring it with you when you download (with the £1 entry fee for the second course) and we can give you a map to save queuing again.

Courses

If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.

See below for details on the courses on offer.

Course School Years Distance Technical Level Who is it for?
White

Y4,5

1.0km 1 The easiest course and a great place for children to start.  The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point.
Year 3 pupils can compete with Y4s.
Yellow Y6,7 1.4km 2 The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start.  The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc.
It will also no longer have a control everytime you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls
Orange Y8,9 2.3km 3

Harder still, the Orange course introduces:

  • Choosing routes - e.g. should I go round the paths to the left or right
  • Using 'Point Features' as control sites
Long Orange Y10+ 2.7km 3

Similar difficulty to an orange course, but quite a bit further!

This course is split into 2 parts with part 1 printed on one side, when you get to the last control you turn over to part 2

Map Memory   1.9km 4

Experienced orienteers or someone up for a challenge! Rather than carrying a map each control has a map extract that shows the location of the next control.  You have to figure out the route and then run to the next control.  If you lose your way you have no option but to retrace your steps back to the last control and try again.

Sprintervals   4 x 1km 3

Experienced orienteers looking for a hard workout and practicing navigation at speed.

This time the courses have a central first control with a butterfly so you can run head-to-head with another runner, taking the loops in different order.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.
