SYO members help England to victory at Interland
The annual Interland match was held in Germany yesterday, and three SYO members were part of the England team that retained the trophy. Zac Field placed 6th in the H17 category, Nick Barrable was 3rd in H21, and Martin Ward was 4th in H40. All three were points scoreres for the England team.
The Interland competition is a 6 nations match, involving England, northern France, Holland, Belgium (Flemish), Belgium (Walloons), and northern Germany. The match rotates around each of the countries, and normally is on relatively flat terrain. However, yesterday's competition near Lubbecke in Germany was on very steeply sloping forest, quite similar to the Forest of Dean. Despite the steepness the forest was very open and runnable, so the leading Mens Open runners were completing 10.6km in 63 minutes (6 mins/km).
Full results are on the organising club's website. Next year the competition will be in Belgium.
Yvette Baker Final
19 juniors travelled down to Hawkbatch Woods to compete in the rescheduled Yvette Baker Trophy Final, and finished 7th out of 14. OD won again by 19 points, this time from LOC. It was very close from 3rd down to 8th, only 20 points seperating 6 teams. To show how close it was, if each of the top 9 scorers for SYO had managed to run 1 minute quicker, then they would have moved into 3rd place.
2011 will see us loosing Adam Bradbury and Ryan Wilson from the junior team, and I would like to thank them for the effort they have put into SYO juniors, helping to establish the juniors as one of the strongest in the country. At the same time we have quite a few young juniors coming through, and I believe the club will become even stronger. The junior team were recently runners up in the South Yorkshire Sports awards for junior team of the year.
A special mention goes to 9 year old Dom Dakin who has just joined SYO and ran in only his 3rd event, the first time for the juniors, and gave a good account of himself in running against juniors of up to 5 years older than himself.
The main area of weakness for the juniors is in the W18 age class. With Cari being unable to run due to illness we had no girls running on the Green course. If anyone knows of any girls in this age group (or others) ask them if they would be interested in joining SYO.
British Night Champs
It was heavy rain all day in Sheffield, but at Bentley Woods near Atherstone the weather and forest were thankfully dry. It wascertainly not cold while running. The clean open forest and good path network led to fast winning times despite the seemingly
long course lengths.
SYO winners were:-
M16 Aidan Smith (7.0k) 48:53
M18 Simon Bradbury (8.4k) 63:59
M45 Charlie Adams (8.4k) 57:35
W16 Katherine Hall (4.6k) 51:25
W40 Jenny Peel (7.0k) 58:59
2nd places to Zac Field (M16), Nick Barrable (M21L), Rachel Elder (W21L).
SYO through to CompassSport Cup Final
At Silton today, SYO won the CompassSport Cup heat ahead of AIRE to secure our place in the final. As SYO are the current CompassSport Cup champions, AIRE also go through to the final which is to be held on Sunday 16th October by DVO at Longshaw (just over the road from last year's final at Burbage). There are quite a few teams in this year's final, see here.
Well done to all those that counted to SYO's victory and even those who didn't - they will have lowered other peoples' points. Make sure you have marked the final in your diaries, let's try and make it a fourth win in-a-row!
The results from today's CSC heat are available on the CLOK website.
