What is Orienteering?

It's a great way to explore the outdoors. The aim is to navigate between control points marked on an orienteering map. Choose the best route to complete the course in the quickest time you can.

Who's it for?

Anyone can do orienteering. South Yorkshire Orienteers has members from 5 to 82! It appeals to runners but also to people who enjoy the outdoors and would like to improve their navigation skills. Our Orienteering Rotherham series is particularly suited to families but everyone is welcome.

Location

We will be based by the car park. Please park in the Herringthorpe Valley car park, S65 3DJ. Look out for the SYO flag.

Timing

Turn up anytime between 11am and 2pm. There's no need to register in advance - just turn up on the day. Courses close at 2.30pm and the controls will then be collected in.

Cost

Free

Courses

There's a choice of 3 courses - short (0.8km) , medium (1.4km) & long (2.2km). You can do all 3 if you like!

What to wear

You don't need any special equipment or clothes. Just wear something comfortable and some sturdy shoes / trainers. A waterproof might be useful if it's wet!

Find Your Way

We will also be introducing British Orienteering's Find Your Way project. Find Your Way allows you to go orienteering at a time convenient to you using a smartphone. Find out how it works and collect your map, then come back another day and give it a go. There are several Find Your Way courses set up around Rotherham so you can explore lots of different locations.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.
