Give orienteering a go at Loxley Common. Loxley Common is an interesting mix of woodland and open common land with lovely views across Sheffield. There is a wealth of interesting contour detail to challenge experienced orienteers and a good path network to cater for the less experienced. Newcomers, children, family groups, runners & experienced orienteers are all welcome! Choose a course to suit your needs and run, jog or walk at your own pace!

Entries

Entries via the SYO Entry System. Please enter by Sunday 18th February to guarantee your choice of course. Entries will remain open on-line until Friday 23rd February. There will be no entry on the day.

Assembly & Parking

Assemby and parking is in the Loxley Common Carpark on Rural Lane. Nearest postcode S6 4BZ. What3words: perky.laptop.energetic. Once the car park is full, parking will be on nearby residential roads - please park considerately. Rural Lane itself is tricky to park on but you should be able to park on Worrall Road, Langsett Ave or Prescott Road.

Timings

Starts 10.30am-12.00pm. 
Courses Close - 1.30pm. You must report to the finish by 1.30pm even if you haven't finished your course.

Costs

£6 (£5 members).
Juniors / Students - £3
Pairs welcome - just pay for 1 entry.

Volunteers get a free run - choose "Helper - free run" when entering.

Toilets

Toilets are available at the Wadsley Jack pub, 66 Rural Lane, S6 4BJ. What3words: visual.regime.insect. The pub is approximately 500m walk from assembly so you may prefer to stop there on route to the event.

Terrain

Loxley Common comprises of large areas of open common land interspersed with areas of woodland. There is a complex network of paths, interesting vegetation detail and some areas of intricate contour detail created by old mine/quarry workings. The south eastern rocky slopes are not being used.

Course information

  • Yellow 2.2km, 70m climb: 11 controls - Easy navigation. A good place for juniors to start.
  • Orange 2.7km: 90m climb: 15 controls - Medium difficulty navigation. A good place for adults to start.
  • Very Short Green 2.0k,: 55m climb: 11 controls - Difficult navigation.
  • Short Green 3.2km: 105m climb: 13 controls - Difficult navigation.
  • Green 3.9km: 135m climb: 19 controls - Difficult navigation.
  • Blue 4.9km: 165m climb: 22 controls - Difficult navigation.
  • Short Brown 5.9km: 215m climb: 25 controls - Difficult navigation.

Please note: courses are different from those at the night event but do use many of the same controls.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.

Venue

Loxley Common comprises of large areas of open common land, runnable underfoot with a complex network of paths on grass, heather and bracken common. To the south there is an area of woodland, with a small section very bouldery.  There is some intricate contour detail created by old mine/quarry workings..

The area was used for the Senior Home International relays in 2006 with a resurvey by Oli Johnson; minor updates have been undertaken in 2010 and 2012.
