Details
What a brilliant way to start orienteering in Sheffield for 2024. A beautiful day, beautiful gardens, great courses planned by James Bryant and hundreds of you turned up and were looked after by all our brilliant volunteers. A big thank you of course to the staff at the Gardens and the council and university for giving us permission. A few stats for you: 423 runs, 850km covered, 151 hours total running and 7186 controls punched (plus a few extra!).
Results and splits are available on the links above (you may notice a few n/c - this stands for non-competitive and is generally for a second run by someone on the same course). Schools team results are below, individual results are on the 'Other' link above. League standings will be updated in a couple of days once results are finalised. If you spot any problems

See below for details on the courses on offer (distances are provisional at the moment!)
Course | School Years | Distance | Climb | Technical Level | Who is it for? |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
White |
Y3/4,5 |
1.0km | 30m | 1 |
The easiest course and a great place for children to start. The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point. This course stays within the Gardens – competitors must not exit it through any gate whilst on their course. Parents: please ensure your children understand this. |
Yellow | Y6,7 | 1.3km | 45m | 2 |
The next step up and a good place for teenagers to start. The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc. This course stays within the Gardens – competitors must not exit it through any gate whilst on their course. Parents: please ensure your children understand this. |
Orange | Y8,9 | 2.1km | 60m | 3 |
Harder still, the Orange course introduces:
This course is split into 2 parts with part 1 printed on one side, when you get to the last control you turn over to part 2 This course stays within the Gardens – competitors must not exit it through any gate whilst on their course. Parents: please ensure your children understand this. |
Light Green | Y10+ | 3.7km | 90m | 4 |
As tricky as we can make it within the Botanical Gardens. This course will be a sprint style orienteering course with lots of changes of direction. This course is split into 2 parts with part 1 printed on one side, when you get to the last control you turn over to part 2 |
Green | 16+ |
4.4km |
100m | 4/5 |
The green course will start in the Botanical Gardens before heading over to Collegiate Campus and around surrounding residential roads. The urban area especially (but not exclusively!) makes for intricate navigation, and route choices, all designed to keep you on your toes. Over 16s only or under 16s accompanied by an adult due to the road crossings. |
Blue | 16+ |
6.1km |
120m | 4/5 | As above but a longer urban section. |
Additional Safety Info
The Botanical Gardens are heavily used by members of the public. Please be extremely courteous and take care not to bump into anyone. Only those aged 16+ on green & blue. Please take extreme care crossing roads.
