Planners comments

First of all, very well done to all who ran today, it was not an easy task. Rivelin is one of SYO's most physically challenging areas, so don't feel discouraged if it wasn't your finest hour!

I had a great challenge but also good fun planning on this area, from it being so linear and pathy in nature. Unfortunately, during the week before the event, we received news that multiple areas we had planned to use (forest & field sections of the map) were out of bounds according to land owners. This greatly reduced the options for essentially any TD4+ course, especially the Green, which had to be reduced to the west side of Lodge Lane to prevent too much path running.

Ensuring the balance between technical orienteering and physical running for all courses was the greatest difficulty. I found that most controls would provide good technical orienteering at the cost of being physically difficult to reach. This affected the Blue and Green most heavily as they needed to be TD5 in technical difficulty, however more accessible than the Brown. Generally, the cost of setting controls & legs on more runnable terrain would mean that Green & Blue especially would be too technically easy, so it was decided to make it more challenging physically & technically than a normal course, at the cost of distance. The overall courses' distances were judged to be adequate as there was significant opportunity throughout the area (especially for Blue & Brown) to run on paths, and around the rougher off-path terrain.

A reminder for anyone looking to run on Rivelin at a different opportunity is to rethink your physical ability and to remind yourself of the area's physical challenges. Also I suggest one should not run up a course purely due to the shorter distances, instead to run down a course, as orienteering on Rivelin always takes longer than expected.

Finally, many thanks to all the many helpers from SYO and ShUOC. Special thanks have to go to the controller, Andy Preston, for being extremely patient and for his invaluable help & advice with planning / organising this event.

Terrain

The Rivelin Valley map covers the wooded slopes on the south side of the valley above the Rivelin Reservoirs. Most of it is managed by the Sheffield Wildlife trust and we are very grateful for permission to to use this rich and sensitive area.It is attractive mixed woodland with areas of contour interest.  Some slopes are very steep and craggy or rock strewn, requiring special care.  For this event we are using the east end of the old Rivelin map plus a newly mapped area to the east side of Lodge Lane. Slopes are steep and there is quite a lot of vegetation at this time of year so running speeds will be relatively low and courses are deliberately shorter than normal.

Map

Rivelin map extract

There are 2 maps, at 1:10000 and 1:7500, both A4 landscape. Contours are 5m. Map is by Peel Land Surveys to ISOM 2017-2. The area east of Lodge Lane (inc Blackbrook Woods) was surveyed in early 2022, with the area west of Lodge Lane being added in summer 2023.

The brown & blue courses have a 1:10000 map with map flip. All other couses have a 1:7500 map and are single sided. Please note: only the blue & brown courses extend to Blackbrook Woods.

Venue

The Rivelin Valley map covers the wooded slopes on the south side of the valley above the Rivelin Reservoirs.  It is mixed woodland (mature conifer and deciduous plus some open areas and younger trees) with areas of contour interest.  Its runnability it at its best in winter and early spring; later in the year the vegetation can make going heavy in places.
