Description
This is one of our Saturday Series of events aimed at introducing adult and junior newcomers to orienteering. Running alongside the public event is the very popular SFSS schools' league. The shorter courses stay within the confines of Meersbrook Park with stunning views across Sheffield, while the green and blue courses for adults offer an interesting mix of urban, wood and parkland terrrain.
Schools Event
Running alongside the public event is the 9th event in the Sheffield Federation of School Sports (SFSS) Orienteering League for both Primary and Secondary pupils. All school age pupils, whichever school they are at can run in the league and you don't need to sign up in advance. Entry to the schools event is free if your school is a member of the SFSS. Information about the SFSS Orienteering League is here. It is not necessary for a teacher to be present from the school.
Children can run on their own, with a friend or with family members. Parents are very welcome to shadow their children.
Costs
Adults £5, SYO members £4
Children £2 (Free for the first run if you are in Y3 or above)
Any additional courses will cost an additional £1 (Or £2 if your previous run was free)
If you would like to go around in a group you would just pay for one entry, plus £1 for each extra map.
Travel and parking
We will be based in the park outside Meersbrook Hall with the start and finish close by. Nearest postcode: S8 0RP. Please park considerately on the streets around the park or better still come by public transport. Buses pass by on Chesterfield Road regularly.
Timings
Registration for courses will open at 12.30pm. You can start any time from 12:30pm - 3pm (2.30pm for the Green and Blue courses). All courses close at 3:30pm at which time we will start to collect controls so please make sure you start early enough to complete your course in time.
Facilities
Thank you to Meersbrook Hall for kindly allowing us access to the toilets.
The Round Table Roasters coffee van will be selling hot drinks by registration and the SYO juniors will be running a cake stall - donations of baked goods will be much appreciated!
Entries
All courses are entry on the day. You just have to turn up, pick a course and fill in an entry form. There will be people on hand to help you if you have any questions.
If you have run in one of our Saturday events previously you should have been given a number. With the number we are able to add you into the results system much quicker.
Costs
Adults £5, SYO / British Orienteering members £4
Children £2 (Free for the first run if you are in Y3 or above and your schools is in the SFSS), Students £2
Any additional courses will cost an additional £1 (Or £2 if your previous run was free)

Orienteering Courses Available
If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another. Adults are welcome to run whichever course they prefer.
See below for details on the courses on offer. Distances are provisional:
Course | School Years | Distance | Technical Level | Who is it for? |
White |
Y4,5 |
1.2km, 45m | 1 | The easiest course and a great place for children to start. The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point. Year 3 pupils compete with Y4s. |
Yellow | Y6,7 | 1.6km, 55m | 2 | The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start. The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc. It will also no longer have a control everytime you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls |
Orange | Y8,9 |
|
3 |
Harder still, the Orange course introduces:
|
Light Green | Y10, 11 | 3.6km, 120m |
4 |
A little harder than the orange course, but quite a bit further! This course is split into 2 parts with part 1 printed on one side, when you get to the last control you turn over to part 2 |
Green |
Y12, 13 |
4.5km, 145m | 5 |
Ideal for adult improvers and experienced orienteers. The courses starts in the park before heading over to the Carr wood area. Due to road crossings over 16s only. |
Blue | 5.1km, 175m |
Venue Details
Meersbrook Park is about 3km south of the Sheffield city centre. Formerly part of the Meersbrook Estate, the park has retained many of its historical features, including the walled garden, and the red-bricked Meersbrook House, built in 1780 (which was home to the Ruskin Museum until 1950). Also within the park is Bishops House, one of only 3 remaining Tudor properties, and one of the oldest buildings in the city, which was built c.1500.
Longer courses will also visit the area south-west of the park, including urban areas and small areas of woodland.
More details about Meersbrook Park...Additional Safety Info
This is a very busy public park. Please be courteous to members of the public while out on your course. Please wear shoes with good grips. Full leg cover should be worn by those running the green or blue courses. Children can be shadowed by an adult.

Also within the park is Tudor House, one of only 3 remaining Tudor properties, and one of the oldest buildings in the city, which was built c.1500.
Longer courses will also visit the area south-west of the park, including urban areas and small areas of woodland.
