Details

Hope you enjoyed your courses at Parkwood Springs. Results and splits are available on the links above, you may have noticed very long split times to control 1, the start and finish ahd their clocks synchronised on a different laptop which seems to have been around 2 minutes adrift from real time. The overall times are correct.

Thank you to all of our helpers today especially Robyn Stanyon for planning courses and Ian Cooper for updating the map.

Introduction

Safety

The area has several popular mountain bike trails, courses are designed so that you should not need to run along them and please be very careful when crossing them.

Courses

If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another. You can choose to run any course you would like but the pupils should run the courses for their school year to be competitive in the league.

See below for details on the courses on offer.

Course School Years Distance Who is it for?
White

Y4,5

1km

The easiest course and a great place for children to start.  The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point.
Year 3 pupils can compete with Y4s.

Yellow Y6,7 1.4km

The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start.  The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc.
It will also no longer have a control everytime you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls.

Orange Y8,9 2.5km

Harder still, the Orange course introduces:

  • Choosing routes - e.g. should I go round the paths to the left or right
  • Using 'Point Features' as control sites

Those doing either of the Orange courses need to be able to judge distances, orientate the map using surrounding features and a compass, use attack points and be bold enough to venture off paths for up to 30 metres. This is a good place for adults to start.

Light Green Y10,11 3.8km

Ideal for improvers or confident adult beginners. The navigation difficulty increases - you will be using simple contours and point features.

Green  G12,13

4.4km

As technically hard as the area allows.  You'll be experiencing a mixture of open heathland, mature woodland and urban terrain. Over 16s only as the course crosses roads.

Blue  B12,13

5.9km

As technically hard as the area allows.  You'll be  experiencing a mixture of open heathland, mature woodland and urban terrain. Over 16s only as the course crosses roads

Facilities

Unfortunately there are no toilet facilities at Parkwood Springs so please do try to go before you come. There will be a camping toilet for emergency use.
