Timings
Start times - 10.30-12.30.
The start is within 500m of assembly, closer to some of the parking. Punching start with start time flexibility. Please take extra care walking to the start and ensure young children are suitably supervised.
Courses close at 1430, controls will be collected and any finishers after this time will be considered retired. Start early if you are going to be out a long time. Please don’t forget to download when you have finished, this is our safety check we do not want to mount an unnecessary search!
Safety
Please read these instructions and there may be additional instructions at the start.
Compulsory waterproof coats are unlikely but are advised if wet or cold.
Fences marked with a solid purple line must not be crossed use marked crossings and gates only. The lines between controls will be diverted around out of bounds where they are compulsory. Where these lines are
broken any route may be used.
The brown course has 2 road crossings, on the way out to Howell woods stay on the left hand verge until you reach opposite the foot path across the road, take care crossing the road, there is usually moderate traffic but good visibility. On the way back from Howell woods there is 350m of quiet lane and then recrossing the main road back into West Haigh, again take care. These sections are included in your time on the course but use common sense and stay safe.
There are plenty of dog walkers, horse riders and mountain bikers who use the area, please be
courteous. There are also off-road motor cyclists quad bikers and car drivers who use a field
and some of the woods in the centre, they may be encountered by the runners on light green
and above, and on a wide track that is used for a short distance on all courses. Please keep out
of their way, you can hear them coming!
Cultivated fields marked yellow with black dots are out of bounds except on the brown
course on the way back from Howell woods where there is a short route that follows the side
of a ditch across the field. Please stay close to the ditch.
Terrain
West Haigh is sloping, runnable beech and birch woodland with depressions and pits. Howell is recently ( 2020) remapped undulating woodland with many holly bushes and rhododendrons. New Park Springs is a nature reserve planted on the old Grimethorpe Colliery tip. It is a mixture of hilly, rough and runnable open with fairly new planting which is extensively runnable. It makes a valuable addition to the previous West Haigh and Howell map. Our thanks go to Barnsley council, Doncaster council, the Land trust and many small local land owners for the use of this area. Dogs are allowed and must be on a lead at all times while you are taking part in the event.
