One of our popular SYO Saturday Series events aimed at introducing newcomers to orienteering and also incorporating the SFSS primary and secondary schools orienteering league. Alongside the normal white to light green courses which explore the Olympic Legacy Park, there are green and blue courses for over 16s which head out into the urban area around the English Institute of Sport (EIS).
Schools Event
Running alongside the public event is the Sheffield School Orienteering League for both Primary and Secondary pupils. Entry to the schools event is free if your school is a member of the Sheffield Federation of School Sports (SFSS). Information about the SFSS Orienteering League is here. It is not necessary for a teacher to be present from the school and you do not need to sign up in advance.
Location
English Institute of Sport (EIS), Coleridge Rd, Sheffield. Postcode: S9 5DA, GR: SK382899. What3words: round.looks.about
Parking
Use the EIS car park. It is free of charge; once the car park is full alternative car parks may charge. There is plenty of parking on surrounding streets but please park considerately. There is a tram stop (Arena/Olympic Legacy Park) 2 minutes’ walk from the EIS which is on the yellow line and purple line.
Timings
Registration for the events will open at 12:30pm and you can start any time from 12:30pm-2.30pm (12.30pm to 3pm on white & yellow) All courses close at 3:30pm at which time we will start to collect controls, so please make sure you start early enough to complete your course in time.
Registration will be based in the athletics arena - follow signs for the arena from outside the main reception.
Entries
All courses are entry on the day. You just have to turn up on the day, pick a course and fill in an entry form. There will be people on hand to help you if you have any questions.
If you ran one of the previous schools events in the series then you should have completed an entry form an been given a number. With the number we are able to add you into the results system much quicker.
For those who would like to do a second run you will need to complete another entry slip with the same details as before. You are welcome to fill this out in advance and bring it with you when you download (with the £1 entry fee for the second course) and we can give you a map to save queuing again.
Facilities
Cafe, toilets, changing rooms.
Costs
Adults £5, SYO & British Orienteering members £4
Children / Students £2 (Free for the first run if you are in Y3 or above and your schools is in the SFSS)
Any additional courses will cost an additional £1 (Or £2 if your previous run was free)
Orienteering Courses Available
The blue and green courses will visit the surrounding urban area. White and Yellow stay within Don Valley Bowl and the Olympic Legacy Park, with Orange and Light Green venturing slightly out of the parks onto the surrounding very minor streets. All courses have an exciting finish back in EIS!
If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another. Course distances are currently provisional.
Course | School Years | Distance | Technical Level | Map | Who is it for? |
White | Y3-Y5 | 1.5 km | 1 |
A5 1:5000 |
The easiest course and a great place for children to start. The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point. |
Yellow | Y6-Y7 |
2.1 km |
2 |
A5 1:5000 |
The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start. The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc. It will also no longer have a control every time you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls |
Orange | Y8-Y9 |
3.0 km 3.9 km |
3 |
A5 1:5000 |
Harder still, the Orange course introduces:
This is a good place for adult beginners to start. |
Light Green | Y10+ |
3.5 km 5.2 km |
4 |
A4 1:5000 |
Ideal for improvers or confident adult beginners. The navigation difficulty increases - you will be using simple contours and point features. No primary aged children on this course as it crosses minor roads and quiet car parks. |
Green |
3.2 km 4.7 km |
5 |
A4 1:5000 |
As hard as the area allows. Over 16s only due to road crossings. |
|
Blue |
5.2 km 8.3 km |
5 |
A4 1:6300 |
As for green but longer.....Over 16s only due to road crossings |
Note the main course distances given are 'straight-line' - actual running distance will be significantly longer, especially for Orange and above. Optimum route distances are given in italics above. Climb is negligible for courses White to Light Green.
