We will be holding a club coaching and training session at Canklow in conjunction with the British Schools Training Event. The area is an interesting mix of deciduous woodland and rough open with intricate contours to challenge the experienced orienteer and a good path network to cater for newcomers and younger juniors. This will be the last chance to orienteer here before the area is embargoed for JK 2025!

Entry & Registration

You must pre-register by 12 noon on Thursday 17th November. Places are limited so please sign up as soon as possible by This email address is being protected from spambots. The session is suitable for all ages & abilities but children who can't yet complete a yellow course independently must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Schools / individuals wishing to attend as part of the British Schools Champs, please enter via the BSOC entry form. You will be able to collect your maps in the car park on arrival. Controls will be out from 1.15pm-3.15pm.

Timings

The session will run from 1:30 -3pm.

Cost

Free to SYO members. Newcomers welcome - £3 per person.

Parking

Parking is in the Boston Castle car park. Nearest postcode - S60 2BD. What3words: debit.crowd.pits. The training will be signposted off the A618 Moorgate Rd. After passing Rotherham hosptital, take the 3rd left turn onto Boston Castle Grove (just before the Tesco Express) and follow to the end. There is no charge for parking.

Equipment

Shoes with good grips and full leg cover must be worn.

Facilities

Unfortunately there are no toilet facilities. The nearest toilet is 1.5 miles away at Tesco Extra, Drummond St, Rotherham S65 1HY. Please go before arrival. We will provide a camping toilet for emergency use.

Terrain

Canklow Woods is a sloping area with a mixture of deciduous woodland, open and semi-open. All along the top of the slope are the remains of stone workings, which provide good contour detail. The area is criss-crossed by a complex path network. There are some areas of brambles but courses have been planned to avoid these.

Map

1:7500 scale, 5m contours. Maps will be printed on waterproof paper.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.

It is on the edge of Rotherham and very accessible, with the southern boundary of the area being less than a kilometre from junction 33 on the M1.
