Terrain & map

The Graves Park map has been resurveyed by Ian Cooper (SYO) through 2022 and is drawn at 1:5000 scale. Contours are at 5 metre intervals.

The area includes a valley running broadly east-west. It is a mixture of open parkland (much of the longer grass has recently been cut) and wooded areas, some of which are steep and can be slippery when wet. There are many paved and unpaved footpaths across the area.

An extract of the map is below.

Map Extract BSOC
  • Tarmac paths are shown by the brown path symbol. Other footpaths are shown by black dashed lines.
  • Significant/prominent trees are shown on the map but not smaller trees, or young and staked trees.
  • There is a stream running down the main valley. The stream is out of bounds for ecological reasons and may only be crossed on the paved footpaths.

Other useful info

Control descriptions will be printed on the map. There will be no loose descriptions.
Juniors can be shadowed on yellow.
Please wear full leg cover and grippy shoes.
SI timing will be used and controls will be SIAC anabled. Dibber hire is free.
The nearest toilets are adjacent to the (closed) cafe, approx 10 mins walk away.
There are male showers available at the transport club but they are likely to be very busy with footballers!

Volunteers

We would welcome offers of help to collect controls - the more, the merrier and the quicker we'll be able to go to lunch! Please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Photography

This provides a sensible balance between the benefits and risks associated with the taking and use of images. If you are unsure about acceptable practice, please speak to the event organiser. Read our photography policy.

Venue

Graves park is Sheffield’s largest park and arguably provides the widest variety of orienteering terrain.  As well as a good path network and open spaces, there are wooded valleys, steepening at the west, with old mineral workings providing a small area of interesting contour detail.

Non-orienteering attractions include a café and a rare-breeds animal farm.
