Details
Hope you all enjoyed your day out at Bolehills and for those on the Blue and Green the exploration of the eastern end of the Rivelin valley.
Huge thank you to Caspar Reynolds (M14) for planning the event and to Colin Best for Controlling. Caspar is another of our up and coming young juniors having started out at the schools events a few years ago. He attended the national training camp in Scotland over the summer with a number of our other juniors and competed last weekend along with 20 other juniors from the club in Northern Ireland running for Yorkshire & Humberside at the Junior Inter-regionals!
Also a big thank you as always to all our volunteers - you all did a brilliant job.
Thank you to the Hallam Rugby Club for the use of the toilets and Clough Riding Stables for being understanding to our needs. Finally apologies to the residents around #57 (in the cul-de-sac on the light green, green and blue) we should have checked in advance that it was OK to use the control site.
Results from today are available on the link above along with split times. Individual school results are on the 'Other' link and the team results are below. We'll update the league results in a couple of days once anyone has notified us of any problems. One of the finish boxes that was put out early on was 2:43 slow, 27 people punched it before we realised and removed it. I've corrected their finish times so sorry if you are now a bit slower than before!
The next Saturday Series event is at the Botanical Gardens on 12 Nov, but there is plenty of orienteering before that with 2 dusk / night events so plenty of chance to practice before we the British Schools Championships that we are hosting in Graves Park on 20 Nov.

Information
This is the second event in our 2022/23 Sheffield Saturday Series of 9 events. These events are perfect for introducing new people to the sport and also provide good value, local orienteering opportunities to experienced orienteers. The series also incorporates the very popular SFSS schools' league.
There are a choice of 6 different courses catering to all ages and abilities. Shorter courses explore Bolehills Park, while longer courses extend along the Rivelin Valley. Individuals, pairs and groups all welcome.
Schools Event
Running alongside the public event is the second event in the Sheffield Federation of School Sports (SFSS) Orienteering League for both Primary and Secondary pupils. Entry to the schools event is free for Y3-Y13 pupils at a Sheffield school. Information about the SFSS Orienteering League is here. The league is also open to home schooled pupils and those out schools outside Sheffield. It is not necessary for a teacher to be present from the school and you don't need to register in advance.
If you ran last year and have changed schools then you can still use the same Id number but you will need to let us know the name of your new school.
Adults' League
There is also is a league for adults. As for the schools' league, your best 5 results count. Run which ever course you feel is most appropriate for you and we will incoporate your score into the league!
Parking & Travel
Parking is limited. Please consider travelling by public transport - the 52 bus stops adjacent to the park every 15 minutes. Plan your journey, here.
If you do park on nearby streets, such as Longfield Road or Woodfield Road, please park considerately.
We will be based by the games courts. Nearest entrances on Northfield Avenue or Longfield Avenue (Nearest postcode S10 1QW, What3Words: plans.stow.sings).
Registration, Start & Finish
Registration for courses will open at 12.30pm. All courses are enter-on-the-day. There will be people on hand to help.
You can start any time from 12.30pm - 3pm but the courses close at 3:30pm. Last start for courses Light Green, Green and Blue is 2.30pm.
Costs
Adults £5, SYO members £4
Children & Students £2 (Free for the first run if you are in Y3 or above and your schools is in the SFSS)
You are welcome to run a 2nd course. 2nd runs cost £1 (Or £2 if your previous run was free)
If you would like to go around in a group you pay for one entry, plus £1 for each extra map. SI card hire is free.
Beginners
There will be helpers on hand at the registration tent and the start to explain the basics of orienteering. If you find the course easy you can have a go at a harder course afterwards.
Facilities
Hallamshire RUFC have very kindly allowed us access to their club house toilets. They have a match on Saturday afternoon so please be very considerate to players who may be changing on the premises. We are extremely grateful to the club chair Tom Helliwell for his assistance and support.
Volunteers
We need plenty of helpers to allow this event to go ahead. No experience is necessary. Please
Orienteering Courses Available
If you complete a course and there is still time you are welcome to try another.
See below for details on the courses on offer. Distances are provisional:
Course | School Years | Distance | Technical Level | Who is it for? |
White |
Y4,5 |
1 km | 1 | The easiest course and a great place for children to start. The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point. Year 3 pupils can compete with Y4s. |
Yellow | Y6,7 | 1.6km | 2 | The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start. The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc. It will also no longer have a control everytime you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls |
Orange | Y8,9 | 2.2km | 3 |
Harder still, the Orange course introduces:
|
Light Green | Y10, 11 | 2.8km | 4 |
Ideal for improvers. The course is further and the navigation difficulty increases and you start to use simple contours and point features. |
Green | G12,13 | 3.4km | 5 |
Navigationally as hard as the area allows with plenty of route choice. |
Blue |
B12,13 | 5.4km | 5 | As per the green but further in distance. |
Longer courses are tougher than the lengths suggest due to the amount of climb and extra distance on roads and paths.
Adults can run any course they wish. We suggest that adult beginners try the light green course.
Blue and Green cross busy roads so are unsuitable for U16s.
Maps and Terrain
The White, Yellow and Orange courses are confined to Bole Hill Park and use an A4 size map with 1:5,000 scale and 5m contour interval. The Light Green courses use the same map. It extends into surrounding pavements and cul-de-sacs, but doesn’t cross any busy roads.
The Blue and Green courses extend into the woods and footpaths of Rivelin Valley using an A3 size map with 1:10000 scale and 5 m contours. The courses use footpaths, fields, the nicer patches of woodland and a few small stretches of road.
Grippy shoes and leg covering are recommended for all but the White and Yellow courses.
Control descriptions are on the map - there are no loose decsription sheets.
Safety & other important info
White, Yellow and Orange courses stay within Bole Hill Park – don’t leave the park or cross any roads.
If you get lost in the park head uphill to the finish.
Take care on steep slopes, steps and rocky ground.
There is a rugby match going on at the same time as the event. The pitch will be marked out of bounds. Please do not cross the pitch, even if the match isn't taking place at the time you are there.
The Blue and Green courses use several roads and bridleways and cross mountain bike tracks - watch out for cars and cyclists and slow down near horses and give them a wide berth.
There will be a timed out section through the stable yard for the blue & green courses. You must WALK through the stable yard to avoid disturbing horse riding lessons and shut the gates.
To avoid causing damage or injury do not climb fences or walls
The longer courses pass near some steep cliffs – these are marked on the map and should be avoided
First Aid available at Registration Tent.
