Information

This is the ninth Saturday Afternoon event in the 2021/22 series.  This series of events is perfect for introducing new people to the sport and also provides local, good value orienteering to the experienced orienteer. Based from outside the cafe in Millhouses park there are a range of different courses to suit all ages and abilities. Take part individually, in a pair or as part of a group and feel free to walk, jog or run round the course at your own pace. The shorter courses stay within the confines of Millhouses Park, while the longer courses also explore Hutcliffe Wood. The map has been newly extended to include Marriot Wood and will be visited by both the green and blue courses.

Schools Event

Running alongside the public event is the 9th event in the Sheffield Federation of School Sports (SFSS) Orienteering League for both Primary and Secondary pupils.  All school age pupils, whichever school they are at can run in the league and you don't need to sign up in advance. Entry to the schools event is free if your school is a member of the SFSS. Information about the SFSS Orienteering League is here.  It is not necessary for a teacher to be present from the school.

Children can run on their own, with a friend or with family members. Parents are very welcome to shadow their children.

Travel and parking

We will be based in the park outside the cafe, here. . Nearest postcode: S7 2QQ. There are pay and display car parks at either end of the park or you can park on Abbeydale Road alongside the park. Please park considerately on the streets. Better still come by public transport, Plan Your Journey.

Timings & Entries

Registration for courses will open at 12.30pm.  You can start any time from 12:30pm - 3pm (2.30pm for the Green, Blue and Light Green courses). The courses close promptly at 3:30pm so please start early if you think you'll need plenty of time.  There is no need to register in advance - just turn up on the day. Help & advice is available to newcomers.

Costs

Adults £5, SYO & BOF members £4
Children / Students £2 (Free for the first run if you are in Y3 or above at a Sheffield School)

What to wear

Participants on light green, green and blue are advised to wear full leg cover due to undergrowth in the woodlands. There are also some steep slopes so studded shoes (but not dobs) are recommended.

Orienteering Courses Available

Course School Years Distance Technical Level Who is it for?
White Y4-Y5 1.1km 1

The easiest course and a great place for children to start.  The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point. It stays within the park.

The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start.  The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc.
