Details
Hope everyone enjoyed Wentworth Castle this evening, fabulous place for an evening run!
Thank you to David for planning (his first event planning for SYO!) and Paul for organising. Seems like all our evening events are consistently getting well over 100 people so it is thanks to all our volunteers pitching in to help out that they run so smoothly.
A handful of people had issues with a shut gate after the map exchange on the Green and Blue course. I guess with hindsight we could have made the map exchange at a control on the other side of the wall to make it clear you could pass through it. As it is only a local event we've shown results with and without the leg removed.
Information
Join SYO at Wentworth Castle Gardens - a wonderful National Trust property. All courses will enjoy sprint style courses around the formal gardens while longer courses will also explore the surrounding country park with its mix of woodland and runnable parkland. Newcomers / non club members are very welcome.
Acknowledgements
We are hugely grateful to Jo Summers and the National Trust for allowing us access for orienteering at their fabulous property after normal opening hours.
How to enter
All entries must be made in advance on the SYO Entry System. Entries are now open and close on Monday 6th June. There will be no entry on the day.
Parking
Please park in the main Wentworth Castle visitor car park. Nearest postcode S75 3EN. What3Words: quiz.spell.local
If the entrance gate to the castle is closed when you arrive or leave it will not be locked, just closed to deter the public after the gardens officially close to the public. Please close behind you.
Starts
Starts 5.15pm to 6.45pm. Courses close 7.45pm promptly. If you think you might take a long time, please come early. It is approximately 7 minutes walk to the start from the car park and a further 3 mins further to the finish / download.
Courses
Yellow - 1.6k - Easy navigation. Ideal for younger juniors.
Orange - 2k - Medium navigation. A good place for adult beginners to start.
Green - 3.9k - Navigation is as hard as the area allows.
Blue - 5.3k - Navigation is as hard as the area allows.
SI controls and timing will be used. Controls will be SIAC enabled. Provisional course distances available shortly.
Map
2 scales will be used for this event.
1:3000 map of the formal gardens. Dom Dakin 2021. Updated Steve Dempsey May 2022.
1:10000 map of the whole site including the surrounding country park. Marcus Pinker 2012 (never used). Updated 2021 Dom Dakin.
Orange & Yellow courses will use just the 1:3000 map. Green & Blue courses will use both scales and will have a double-sided map.
Facilities
Toilets adjacent to the finish - approx 5 minutes walk beyond the start.
Costs
£6 adults (£5 members), £3 juniors & students. Pairs / family groups pay for one entry, extra map £1. Dibber hire free.
Important Event Information
Use marked crossing points. Fences are marked with a red 'do not cross' line - do not climb any fences! There are some gates - please close behind you as there are deer in parkland.
Please be courteous to other park users. Red tape in the area must not be crossed as it is marking out some diseased areas. As usual ALL flower beds are out of bounds.
Volunteers
We need volunteers to enable this event to go ahead. Control collectors also required.
If you can help in any way, please

Safety & risk
A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.
Photography
SYO has an agreed policy on the taking of photographs at events, based on national guidance. This provides a sensible balance between the benefits and risks associated with the taking and use of images. If you are unsure about acceptable practice, please speak to the event organiser. Read our photography policy.
Privacy
When entering our events your personal details (name, gender, age class & club) will appear in the results section of this website. Read our privacy policy to see how we look after your personal data.
Venue
Wentworth Castle is now managed by a partnership between the National Trust, Barnsley Council and Northern College. They have given us permission to orienteer, including in the gardens, unlike our previous attempt to use the area. The parkland is largely open, with several areas of woodland. The gardens include an area of formal planting and a large area of woodland including the ruined fake castle: Stainborough Castle.
The map has been fully updated in 2021, needing a detailed survey of the garden area. The previous map was surveyed and drawn for the British Schools by Marcus Pinker in 2012, but never used
