Details

So after a lovely day it got dark pretty quickly and ended up being a race of two halves with the dark half being significantly harder!  Results and splits are on the link above.  Thanks to Kris Groom for planning at short notice and having to deal with some significant changes as a result of the felling due to Ramorum Disease - please make sure you clean shoes before using them elsewhere.  Thank you to all our other helpers especially those who went out after the courses closed to collect controls.

Information

We all enjoyed Wheata in the spring, now you get a chance to enjoy the lovely Autumnal colours!

How to enter

All entries must be made in advance on the SYO Entry System. Entries are now open and close on Monday 4th October. There will be no entry on the day.

To complete your entry you will need to agree to "abide by the Participant Code of Conduct".

Location and Parking

location

The car park (normally closed) is on the east side of Woodhead Road about 1km north of Grenoside Village, and just before the Wharncliffe/Greno Woods car park on the west side of Woodhead Road.

Exiting the car park at the north end, the start location is about 300 metres away across the road - PLEASE TAKE CARE CROSSING THE ROAD TO THE START AND FROM THE FINISH, CHILDREN MUST BE ACCOMPANIED.

We have permission to use this car park for the event. The gate will be locked at 2000 hours so please remove your car before then.

If this car park is full you will need to try the public car park across the road or roadside parking (take care).

Start / Finish / Download

Starts 1700 to 1830 hours. Courses close at 1930 hours prompt. Please choose an early start time if you think you will be out a long time.

The finish is adjacent to the public car park. Download is situated in the private car park. Please collect hire dibbers from download.

Important Event Safety Information

Sunset is at 18.30 so if you want to run in daylight you need to pick an early start time. We strongly advise taking a headtorch whatever time you start as it will be gloomy in the woods. If you are starting at 18.30 then you are advised to take a back up torch. Whistles and full leg cover also strongly advised.

Shadowing of inexperienced juniors is encouraged. Less experienced juniors also encouraged to run in pairs.

Courses

Yellow        2.1km, 9 controls

Green        4.1km, 18 controls

Blue           6.5km. 21 controls

Control Descriptions

There will be no loose control descriptions but you can print off your own. They are attached as a document under other at the top of the page.

Map and Terrain

1:7500, 5m contours.

A4 extract from the Wharncliffe/Wheata Woods map. Magnetic North lines are 300 metres apart.

Although Ian Cooper has made updates  to the map in 2021 it is a well used public area so new small paths can be created. There may be new motorcycle tracks in Wharncliffe Woods.

Wheata Woods has a good path structure, with many scattered holly bushes. Wharncliffe has fewer paths and holly bushes,

Entry Cost

£6 Adults
£5 British Orienteering/SYO Members
£3 Juniors & Students

Facilities

There is a composting toilet in the ca park. It relies on bacterial action. Only human waste and toilet paper should be deposited in the toilet. Anything else must go in the separate bin provided. Continued use of these facilities depends on following this.

Volunteers

We need volunteers to enable this event to go ahead. Kris has stepped in with 2 weeks notice to plan this event and so if anyone can get just a few controls it would be really appreciated.

If you can help in any way, please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. Helpers receive a free run. Please pick the helper option when entering.

Ramorum Disease

A number of areas of larch are currently being felled in woodlands around sheffield including Wharncliffe and Wheata. Please do whatever you can to help minimise the spread of ramorum disease and other plant diseases. Please brush soil, mud and leaf debris off footwear and wheels before leaving areas of woodland. These items should then be washed before visiting another similar site.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.

Photography

SYO has an agreed policy on the taking of photographs at events, based on national guidance. This provides a sensible balance between the benefits and risks associated with the taking and use of images. If you are unsure about acceptable practice, please speak to the event organiser. Read our photography policy.

Privacy

When entering our events your personal details (name, gender, age class & club) will appear in the results section of this website. Read our privacy policy to see how we look after your personal data.

Venue

Wheata Woods is a pleasant area of deciduous urban woodland on the outskirts of Sheffield. It adjoins the village of Grenoside and is included on the larger map of Wharncliffe and Greno Woods used for the British Championships in 2011. Plenty of paths for the less technical courses with accurately mapped thickets and contour detail for the more technical courses.
