Details
It has been a while since we used Concord Park for a variety of reasons. I hope you enjoyed Richard's courses - for the longer courses I think you were adequately challenged in Woolley Woods! From the positive responses we received I don't think it will be 6 years before we are back again! Thank you to all our helpers but special thanks to Richard for planning and the guys from Steel City Striders who helped patrol the park to avoid vandalism - part of the reason we haven't been back to the park for a while was due to a number of boxes being smashed last time.
It was great to see many new people giving it a go having been out doing Beat the Street, from looking at the stats almost 60,000 people in Sheffield have given it a go, and it looks like they will break the 400,000 miles mark today or tomorrow which is staggering.
Apologies for the delay in getting the results up, a miss-communication around who was doing what! Individual results and split times are available on the links above, For those that are new to this the split times show how long everyone took to do each leg of your course so even if you didn't win you may find you had some speedy splits.
This was the last event in our stop start schools league, prize-giving for the league will be at our event this Wednesday in Dore. After a break over the summer holidays we will be back with a bang in September with a full year of events. We will get the events onto the website in the next couple of weeks, 5000 flyers arrived on Friday so if you need some for your school in September get in touch.

Courses
See below for details on the courses on offer. Course lengths are indicative and may well change subject to final planning and controlling. You can enter whichever course you like - the school years are if you want to compete in the year group competition. We suggest adult beginners & Y10/11 start on orange if they have never done any orienteering before.
Course | School Years | Distance | Technical Level | Who is it for? |
White |
Up to Y5 |
1.1km |
1 | The easiest course and a great place for children to start. The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point. |
Yellow |
Y6/7 |
1.8km | 2 |
The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start. The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc. Because of the park setting there will be some controls that do not follow line feature. Instead they will be on a point feature (e.g. a tree) but close by. By turning the map so that it matches the ground you will be able to see the next control to go to. |
Orange |
Y8/9 |
2.7km | 3 |
Harder still, the Orange course introduces:
|
Light green |
Y10/11 |
3.5km | 4 |
Ideal for improvers The navigation difficulty increases and you start to use simple contours and point features. |
Green |
G12/13 |
4.6km | 4 |
As techincally difficult as the area allows but avoids the most physically difficult terrain. |
Blue |
B12/13 |
5.3km |
4 |
As for the Green but longer and hillier... |
COVID Guidance for competitors & volunteers
Some key points from the code of conduct:
- You must not take part in any form of orienteering if you or any member of your household have had recent Covid-19 symptoms.
- Minimise contact with people from outside your household before, during and after your run. Practice social distancing at all times, including before and after your run as well as when you are out on your course. Take particular care to keep the required distance from other people in the vicinity of the Start, at download and when passing other competitors or members of the public on narrow paths, going through gates, etc.
- Sanitise your hands before and after your run.
- Do not touch the controls. If using a SIAC dibber hover your hand above the SI unit. If dibbing, just place the dibber in the hole, without touching the box.
- Please be super courteous to any members of the public that you come across before, during or after the event.
Safety & risk
A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.
Photography
SYO has an agreed policy on the taking of photographs at events, based on national guidance. This provides a sensible balance between the benefits and risks associated with the taking and use of images. If you are unsure about acceptable practice, please speak to the event organiser. Read our photography policy.
Privacy
When entering our events your personal details (name, gender, age class & club) will appear in the results section of this website. Read our privacy policy to see how we look after your personal data.
Venue
The most recent Concord Park map covers three very different terrain types:
- Concord Park: parkland with games courts, scattered trees, gardens etc
- Wooley Woods: steep mostly runnable woodland with some controur detail
- Low Wincobank: quiet residential streets with an interesting area of alleys and steps
