Planner's comments

This was the most rewarding event I’ve ever planned. Everybody was just so thrilled to be out in a forest on a fine day doing proper courses that it didn’t seem to matter about the courses although I enjoyed ear wigging conversations about where people had gone wrong.

Course lengths seemed to be about right.

It was a particular pleasure for me for my son Craig to run the Brown. When he was 13 in Leicester, a school teacher introduced him to Orienteering & I, having never heard of orienteering nor done any running, was commandeered to take him, rather unenthusiastically to Walesby Forest in 1986. I took the Observer with me but walked around a Yellow instead of reading it & the rest as the hackneyed saying goes “is history”. He damaged knee ligaments badly whilst at university & so has orienteered only intermittently since although more recently has taken up road running. So without Craig, somebody else would have been planning today.

Ian Cooper’s help is appreciated & his idea for double sided maps for the long courses was an important one. Mick Lucking was his usual amiable & flexible self, not only printing the maps at short notice but also sorting out some wrinkles.

As always, I am grateful to those who collected in controls, an essential requirement for me as I dodder towards my dotage.

The event went through several cancellations, type etc but Covid lock downs etc meant I thoroughly enjoyed revising courses & revisiting the woods. I hope my mileage which may have caused more CO2 damage than Bitcoin mining, was worth it.

Join us for an exciting orienteering race in the lovely runnable woodland of Tankersley. There is a wealth of contour detail to challenge the experienced orienteer with a full range of technical courses and a good path network for the less experienced. This event is open to SYO and British Orienteering members only and is a cut above a standard local event!

Terrain

Tankersley Woods is largely natural woodland littered with the scars of industry and wartime and has a dense network of tracks and paths of varying sizes. The area is gently sloping but with occasional steep slopes at old embankments, quarries and spoil heaps. Most of the pits are large in size and many are ‘bell pits’ with the pit located on top of a hill or rounded spur. The woods are at their best at this time of year.

There are many paths and tracks which can be confusing. New paths tend to appear overnight due to the activity of off-road motorcyclists and quad bikes.

There are one or two un-crossable marshes which are best avoided. One feature shown on the map as a crag is actually an old railway bridge abutment.

Starts

View the current Start List. Start times from 9.30am to11.30am.  You will need to select from the available 15 minute start blocks when you pre-enter. There will be no entry on the day. Courses close 1.15pm promptly. If you think you might take a long time, please select an early start time.

COVID Guidance for competitors & volunteers

Some key points from the code of conduct:

  • You must not take part in any form of orienteering if you or any member of your household have had recent Covid-19 symptoms or have been asked to self-isolate.
  • Minimise contact with people from outside your household before, during and after your run.  Practice social distancing at all times, including before and after your run as well as when you are out on your course.  Take particular care to keep the required distance from other people in the vicinity of the Start, at download and when passing other competitors or members of the public on narrow paths, going through gates, etc.
  • Do not congregate in groups greater than 6 at the event.
  • Sanitise your hands before and after your run.
  • Do not touch the controls. If using a SIAC dibber hover your hand above the SI unit. If dibbing, just place the dibber in the hole, without touching the box.
  • Tankersley is well used by the public.  Please be super courteous to any members of the public that you come across before, during or after the event, and observe social distancing at all times.

We strongly encourage the following:

  • Arrive in time for your start already kitted up and ready to run. Both starts are within 50m from the entrance to the woods at the end of the road where cars are parked.  There will be a start clock at the entrance to the woods, so that you can see the current call-up time.
  • You should aim to arrive at the start for your start time with the minimum of standing around – realistically this means entering the woods no more than 3 minutes before your start block.
  • On the course, socially distance from other competitors and the public.
  • At control points please be patient if waiting to dib the SI box.
  • You have to ‘dib’ the Finish box.  Please move away from the finish as quickly as you can and go straight to download.
  • Download will be positioned at a COVID safe position both for competitors and the download team. There will be a ‘splits’ printer for your timings, with a hand sanitiser.  Please avoid gathering to discuss split times. If you do have to queue please maintain social distancing.
  • Once you have successfully downloaded please make your way to your car.

Additional Event Information / Safety

Venue

Tankersley Woods has a rich industrial heritage and once contained factories and railways during the war when it was heavily bombed. It now contains a wealth of detail with many bell pits, bomb craters and myriad of paths created by local people spread across mixed vegetation comprising natural oak woodland with bluebells through reclaimed spoil heaps with maturing shrubs and young trees.

The area has been worked for coal and iron, which has left complex slopes covered by the scars of hand-hewn "bell-pits" and other earth-works from the 19th century and before. These days the area is used by dog-walkers, cyclists and trail-bikers, leaving a large number of paths. In the most active biking areas the path network is very complex. The mapping of these paths is good, but small new paths can be created quickly.

There are brambles in parts of the area, but most are at ankle-length, are pretty runnable and have no bramble screen. There are some areas of thicker brambles in the far south of the map.
