Details

It has been a while since we set up and took down the event in the rain... Norfolk Park is beautiful on a sunny day.. ..honest. Well done to everyone who got out there on their courses, a fantastic turnout (251) given the conditions. For the stats lovers amongst you total running time 120:54:29, 3018 controls visited, 666.6km run and 14.37km of height gained...

Courses were planned today by one of our juniors Matt Morris (M16) he did a great job for a first-time planner especially given his controller (me) was a bit lacksadaisical...  He started orienteering on the Yellow course at the school's events 4 years ago and is now a member of the Yorkshire Junior Squad, went with the squad out to Sweden on our tour last summer and would have gone on the national M/W16 summer tour to Deeside if not for Covid so lots for you all to aim for!

We had a fantastic number of helpers today which hopefully made everyone's job easier and meant that people didn't get too wet and cold.

Provisional results are below with splits and schools results using the buttons below. If you see anything wrong This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

The next Saturday Series event is not until Sat 7 Nov at the Botanical Gardens assuming it can still go ahead.  In the meantime, we hope to have one of our regional events in the City Centre next Sunday once we have agreement from the council on the start locations, hopefully it will be confirmed on Monday.  There will be courses for juniors right up to elite level.

See you all at an event soon

Pete

Information

So it seems that our Saturday Series events are like buses.....none for ages and then 2 in quick succession! Saturday Series 2 takes place on 3rd October at Norfolk Park.

Alongside the white to light green courses, there are green and blue urban courses for adults using both the park and the surrounding intricate housing estates - although a large part of these courses are urban we would advise using studded shoes as there are still plenty of grassy slopes to negotiate.

Due to Covid regualtions, everyone must pre-enter on the SYO entries system by Thursday 1st October. There is absolutely no entry on the day. Second runs are still permitted but you must still pre-enter.

Schools Event

Unfortunately the SFSS and National PE Association have decided that no inter-school competitions can currently take place. As a result pupils will run individually in their school years. Results will be published but no schools' names will be listed. The league will still run for children in their school years across the 9 events with best 5 to count. As soon as the SFSS allow competitions to restart we will reinstate the schools' league.

Timings

Starts for white and yellow will be open from 12.30 to 3pm.
Starts for orange and light green will be open from 12.30pm to 2.45pm
Starts for green and blue will be open from 12.30 to 2.30pm.

All courses close at 3.30pm.

When you enter you will be asked to select a 15 minute start block. Please make sure you only turn up at the start during the start block you have chosen. Parents/carers are welcome to accompany their children on the course.

How to enter

You must pre-enter on the SYO entries system. Entries will open on Saturday 26th September at 7pm and close on Thursday 1st October. If you have any problems with regards to entries, please email the This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Enter early to guarantee your entry and ensure you get the best choice of start times.

If you are a school pupil, you will need your 4 digit school's ID to enter. There is a 'lookup' function on the entries site. If you don't have an ID number, please email the This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

To complete your entry you will need to agree to "abide by the Participant Code of Conduct".  This can be found here.

COVID Guidance for competitors & volunteers

Some key points from the code of conduct:

  • You must not take part in any form of orienteering if you or any member of your household have had recent Covid-19 symptoms.
  • Minimise contact with people from outside your household before, during and after your run.  Practice social distancing at all times, including before and after your run as well as when you are out on your course.  Take particular care to keep the required distance from other people in the vicinity of the Start, at download and when passing other competitors or members of the public on narrow paths, going through gates, etc.
  • Do not congregate in groups greater than 6 at the event.
  • Sanitise your hands before and after your run.
  • Do not touch the controls. If using a SIAC dibber hover your hand above the SI unit. If dibbing, just place the dibber in the hole, without touching the box.
  • Please be super courteous to any members of the public that you come across before, during or after the event.

Costs

Adults £5, British Orienteering / SYO members £4
Children / Students £2 (Free for the first run if you are in Y3 or above and your schools is in the SFSS)
Any additional courses will cost  £2

Free run for helpers. Please use code HERE2HELP. Offers of help to Pauline please.

Travel and parking

Norfolk Park is close to the centre of Sheffield. We will be based outside the Centre in the Park (here). Nerest postcode S2 2PL. What3words: best.closer.rush

There is a car park off Guildford Avenue however there is only space for about 20 cars.  There are plenty of residential roads nearby but please park considerately.  By Tram the nearest tram stop is Arbourthorne Road. It is a five minute walk from the tram stop to the Centre in the Park. The centre has toilets and a fab cafe.

Terrain

A mix of runable woodland and open parkland within the boundaries of the park. Intricate housing estates surround the park.

Courses

See below for details on the courses on offer. Course lengths are indicative and may well change subject to final planning and controlling.

Course School Years Distance Technical Level Who is it for?
White Y4,5

1.5km
35m

1 The easiest course and a great place for children to start.  The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point.
Yellow Y6,7 1.8km
45m
2

The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start.  The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc.
It will also no longer have a control every time you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls.

Because of the park setting there will be some controls that do not follow line feature.  Instead they will be on a point feature (e.g. a tree) but close by.  By turning the map so that it matches the ground you will be able to see the next control to go to.

Orange Y8,9 2.2km
65m
3

Harder still, the Orange course introduces:

  • Choosing routes - e.g. should I go round the paths to the left or right
  • Using 'Point Features' as control sites
  • Basic use of a compass
Light green Y10+ 3.0km
80m
4

Harder than the Orange, this course will also go outside of the park and will cross minor roads. It is only suitable for secondary aged children or older.

Green

Age 16+ 3.6km
120m
 4

A course which uses both the park and surrounding urban areas. It is as technically hard as we can make it given the area. Over 16s only due to road crossings.

Although a large part of this and the Blue course are urban we would advise using studded shoes as there are still plenty of grassy slopes to negotiate

Blue  Age 16+

5.6km
180m

 4

As for the Green but longer and hillier...

Venue

Norfolk Heritage Park is a 28 hectare park with a long history, as it is one of the oldest public parks in the country.  From 1999 to 2005 the park has been regenerated through a £3.6 million restoration project.  New visitor facilities have been constructed, including the Centre in the Park, a multi-purpose community building.  The park landscape has been restored to its original Victorian character.

From an orienteering perspective its interest is largely in the woodlands that cover about 25% of the park and the urban surrounds which are currently undergoing re-development.  There is a permanent course, maps can be downloaded from the Friends of Norfolk Park website.
