Beginners

There will be helpers on hand at the registration tent and the start to explain the basics of orienteering and marshals (in high-viz jackets) out on the course who can help if you get lost. If you find the course easy you can have a go at a harder course afterwards.

Courses

White            0.8km   20m climb     Very Easy       Great starting point for younger juniors.
Yellow          1.3km    35m climb     Easy               Good for improving juniors and novice teenagers.
Orange         2.1km    90m climb     Medium          Ideal for more confident juniors and novice adults.
Light Green  2.8km   150m climb    Harder            Suits experienced juniors and more confident adults

Green           3.8km    240m climb   As technically challenging as the area allows (No under 16s)
Blue              5.0km   310m climb   As per the green course but a bit tougher (No under 16s)

Longer courses are tougher than the lengths suggest due to the amount of climb and extra distance on roads and paths.
Light Green is 4.1km optimum route with a mix of park and urban terrain and is suitable for hilly sprint orienteering training.
Blue and Green cross several busy roads so are unsuitable for U16s unless accompanied by an adult.

Maps and Terrain

The White, Yellow and Orange courses are confined to Bole Hill Park and use an A4 size map with 1:4,000 scale and 5m contour interval. The Light Green courses use the same map. It extends into surrounding pavements and cul-de-sacs, but doesn’t cross any busy roads so is suitable for experienced under 16s.

The Blue and Green courses extend into the woods and footpaths of Rivelin Valley using an A3 size map with 1:5000 scale and 5 m contours. The courses use footpaths, fields, the nicer patches of woodland and a few small stretches of road.

Grippy shoes and leg covering are recommended for all but the White and Yellow courses.

The map uses Sprint Orienteering map symbols and has been partially updated in recent years but there are many unmapped paths and vegetation features mainly affecting the longer courses.

Control descriptions are on the map - there are no loose decsription sheets.

Safety

White, Yellow and Orange courses stay within Bole Hill Park – don’t leave the park or cross any roads.
If you get lost in the park head uphill to the finish.
Take care on steep slopes, steps and rocky ground.

The Blue and Green courses use several roads and bridleways and cross mountain bike tracks - watch out for cars and cyclists and slow down near horses and give them a wide berth.
You must WALK through the stable yard on Blue and Green courses to avoid disturbing horse riding lessons.
To avoid causing damage or injury do not climb fences or walls
The longer courses pass near some steep cliffs – these are marked on the map and should be avoided
