Well that was a wet one - definitely a good shout to book the indoor room! Perhaps not the BBQ event we'd been hoping for... who'd have thought this was June and not November?!
Thank you and well done to Kris Groom for his first time planning - really good challenging courses, with Blue competitors enjoying the extension into part of Tankersley. The BBQ also appeared to be a great success - only a few buns and onions left!

Enjoy orienteering amongst the varied terrain of Hesley Scout Camp. The woodlands contain a wealth of contour detail as a result of the area's rich industrial heritage and this mixed with sprint style orienteering through the huts and obstacles of the main camp will provide a good challenge for experienced orienteers. There are also plenty of paths and open areas to cater for the less experienced. Newcomers are especially welcome - help & advice available.
Parking
Please park in the main scout camp car park off White Lane. Nearest postcode S35 2YH
Registration & Starts
Registration from 5.45pm-6.45pm. Starts 6pm to 7pm. Courses close 8pm promptly. If you think you might take a long time, please come early.
Courses
Yellow - technically easy - 1.9km. Ideal for younger juniors.
Orange - technically medium difficulty - 2.3km. A good place for adult beginners to start.
Green - technically hard - 3.2km
Blue (over 16s only due to road crossing) - technically hard - 4.7km
SI controls and timing will be used.
Facilities
Indoor registration and download, toilets and indoor seating area so your burgers don't get soggy! Hot drinks will also be on sale.
Costs
£5 adults (£4 members), £3 juniors & students. Pairs / family groups pay for one entry, extra map £1. Dibber hire free.
Post Event Social
From 6.45pm we will be having a BBQ at the scout camp.
Please pre-order your food by 6pm on Friday 7th June. Choice of:
- Beef or cheeseburger
- hotdog
- portabella mushroom in a bun (vegan option).
The burgers and pork sausages will be freshly handmade by the Jacky's local butcher. Both are 4oz. Sauces and onion will also be provided. Cost = £1.50 each.
The scout shop will also be open selling cold soft drinks, sweets and ice-cream from 6.30-7.30pm.
You are also welcome to bring your own food to BBQ plus beverages.

Safety & risk
A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event. If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. The sealed envelope will only be opened in an emergency.

Venue
Hesley and Tankersley Woods have a rich industrial heritage and once contained factories and railways during the war when it was heavily bombed. They now contains a wealth of detail with many bell pits, bomb craters and myriad of paths created by local people spread across mixed vegetation comprising natural oak woodland with bluebells through reclaimed spoil heaps with maturing shrubs and young trees.
The area has been worked for coal and iron, which has left complex slopes covered by the scars of hand-hewn "bell-pits" and other earth-works from the 19th century and before. These days the area is used by dog-walkers, cyclists and trail-bikers, leaving a large number of paths. In the most active biking areas the path network is very complex. The mapping of these paths is good, but small new paths can be created quickly.
There are brambles in parts of the area, but most are at ankle-length, are pretty runnable and have no bramble screen. There are some areas of thicker brambles in the far south of the map.
