Thanks for coming; I hope you enjoyed a very different type of orienteering.  Do you think it worth doing one or more like this in future summers?

I think four runners had problems with Maprun (or phones) failing before the event had finished; we need to find out if there is any way of recovering partial runs and completing them manually for future events.

For those answering questions I must apologise for my sloppy assumption that the big ash tree was an oak at the control near the church.  I have mostly been generous in accepting close answers, including those on the short score who I suspect didn’t reach the correct gate at control 5 (all the top scorers did).   I have added a list of controls visited for the top scorers on each course (may not be correct order), but it takes too much time to do for all.  Anyone who needs to understand why their score is not what they expected, please email me.

These results will be updated when I can find (when I get home on Monday) or be emailed information on controls and timing from Tim W, Mark C and Nick L plus a time for John W.  I will also check the rest of the Maprun tracks to add unrecorded controls (already added some, see “plus” notes below).

Maprun raw results can be found here.  All four events are called 'Hathersage'; the sequence is 60m, 90m, 120m then 30m.

For the long score, I have moved runners to the next time band if their penalty is more than 50.  I’ve left them greyed out in the lower category too.

An evening score orienteering event in the beautiful countryside surrounding Hathersage. Suitable for experienced orienteers, newcomers, runners and children - there is an option to suit everyone.

Entry

Please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. to request a map (senior or junior score course) by 6pm Tuesday 11th September. Also indicate if you are likely to attend the social (see below).

Format

For adults who would like a long run this will be a score event (visit as many points as possible in the time allowed) on public footpaths (and open access ground if you get out of the valley) using an ordnance survey map, so similar to a mini mountain marathon.  It is based on MDOC's Countryside Score events, but with SYO variations.   You have a choice of a 60 minute, 90 minute or 2 hour score event (can change choice during run if closing time allows). Under 16s can take part in the this event if accompanied by an adult.

For under 16s and adults who prefer a short run there will be a 30 minute score event in Hathersage using an orienteering map.

There are 2 options for recording the controls you visit:

1) Maprun - Upload the Maprun App to your android or apple phone, plus the event files, and it will automatically recognise that you have reached each control point. See details below.

2) Pencil & Paper - At each control you need to answer a question (e.g. the question is "Telephone pole number at 2m”, answer column has “163_ _”  means spotting the plate 2m up the pole  with 16347 written on it and filling the blanks with "47").

Location

Registration, start and finish will be in the new Heart of Hathersage centre on Main Road (nearly opposite the Spar shop/petrol station - S32 1AA).  Outside outdoor gear shop have generously allowed to keep their car park open for us after their closing time: enter beside the petrol station.  We need to lock it up soon after 20:00.

Please don't park in 'The Croft' or on residential roads as this will upset local residents and jeopardise future events in the village.

Timings

Registration 17:15-18:30
Starts from 17:30- 18:40.

Bring your SI card or borrow one (no charge) for start and finish timing if doing the pencil & paper version.

Sunset at 19:29, so we will be closing down the finish at 20:00.  You must start before 17:50 for 2 hours, before 18:20 for 90 minutes.

You will be able to allow you to run the event on another day and your name will be added to the results, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. for details.

Afterwards we are meeting at the Millstone Inn (S32 1DA). Please feel free to join us for food or drinks. Just order from the main menu at your convenience.

Footwear

Both events are mainly on footpaths, with some steep sections, but most routes will have a small amount of tarmac.  Ideal footwear will have good grip, but probably not dob studs

Maprun details

If your Android or Apple phone has GPS functions, you can use Maprun.  You can get all the data at home/work while you are connected to WiFi.  If so, you won’t need data during the event, just GPS.

Maprun can be loaded to your Android phone from Google App Store, to your iPhone from Apple App Store.

You need to register yourself in the Maprun app, then search for the event in MR UK -> MR South Yorkshire.  There are four Hathersage events.  Choose ScoreV30 for the 30 minute score event on the Orienteering map.  Choose V60, V90 or V120 if you wish to do the long score.  If you switch to a different time limit after starting, don’t worry, we’ll adjust later.

Safety & risk

A comprehensive risk assessment will have been carried out by the organiser, but participants take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety during the event.

If a competitor has a pre-existing medical condition that they think should be declared, please complete a medical form at enquiries. This will only be opened in an emergency.

Photography

SYO has an agreed policy on the taking of photographs at events, based on national guidance. This provides a sensible balance between the benefits and risks associated with the taking and use of images. If you are unsure about acceptable practice, please speak to the event organiser.
Read our photography policy.

Venue

The village of Hathersage and some surrounding countryside. It was mapped in 2010 and had not been used for an orienteeriing event before March 2011. The terrain is a mixture of pavement, road, track, grassy slopes, parkland, and (muddy) paths. Your footwear will be challenged, but there are no brambles or bracken.
