Hope you all enjoyed the lovely wood today.  It was nice to run through the woods without too much undergrowth.  Great courses by Paul, organisation by Amanda and controlling by Ian.  Thank you to all our helpers who made the event run smoothly.

We have put the preliminary result up on the links above.  Those on the Green and Blue were affected early on by control 34 being thrown in bushes and 103 also on the Blue.  The results now up remove affected legs.  There was also a bit of confusion early on with control 31, the box was actually set to 32 so once we realised we could update the software to accept 32 as well and everyone has been re-instated.

Controller comments

Apologies to those early runners affected by the 'stolen' controls #34 and #103, which were found in bushes 250m away and rehung by Ali Buckley - also to Laura Goy for rehanging #105. It seems in a public area like Sandall Beat we need to gripple all controls. So we voided legs into and out of #34 & 103 (on Green and Blue) and reinstated those early runners who found no controls at these sites.

Thank you all for coming - it was a lovely day in a lovely wood and many competitors made favourable comments, although I now need to think about how to redraw the uncrossable ditch - suggestions were appreciated.

Many thanks to Paul for his courses and thoughtful work - the 36 control blue course was his idea (although without knowing old SI dibbers only register 30 controls), but people enjoyed it (especially Charlotte Ward, as good WOC sprint training). Thanks also to Amanda for her efficient organisation - I think all I needed to do was read and sign the Risk Assessment.

A fabulous chance for orienteering in the lovely runnable ancient woodland of Sandall Beat. Courses (from white to blue) to suit all ages and abilities, newcomers especially welcome. This event also incorporates the Yorkshire and Humberside Schools Championships. No need to pre-register - just turn up on the day.

Sandall Beat, Doncaster. Follow signs to Doncaster racecourse. Signed from the A18 500m NE of the roundabout with the A638.   Nearest post code DN2 6JP. Parking at the end of Sandall Beat Road Google Maps

Assembly, Start & Finish

Lovely grassy assembly area with parking, start & finish all adjacent. Toilets available. Registration 10am-12 noon. Starts 10.30am -12.30pm. Courses close 14.30.

*Special Info for the Blue course: Please note the Blue course is designed to maximise your enjoyment of Sandall Beat’s woodland (rather than paths) with an extended “sprinty” feel and has 36 controls. You will need a Series 9 or above SI Card to run Blue. We have a limited number of Series 9 dibbers for hire. Two parts of the course are printed on the front and back of the map and there is no room for control descriptions on the map. You will need to carry the loose control descriptions, which will be longer than a standard description holder.

We will be offering SI card registration at this event. If you have your own dibber (and it is registered to you with British Orienteering), please bring it to registration and join the ‘I Own My Dibber’ queue.'

Terrain 

The woods are in delightful condition for direct running. Only a few parts of the south eastern area, where the canopy is thinner, have noticeable ground vegetation, mainly low bracken. The small rough open area in the east is very rough, with nettles and thistles, and is best crossed on the paths!

The area features many ditches and small erosion gullies. Depending on the weather, the gullies may appear to be ditches or the smaller ditches may be dry. The main drainage ditch running NW to SE through the area is dangerous and unpleasant to cross. All competitors should use the marked crossing points on this ditch. Other ditches are in the main easy and safe to cross, though take care of course.

Updated by Dave Peel (2016) with minor updates for the event. 1:5000 – there is only one very short contour on the map! the special symbol x represents a bench seat.

Safety

Whistles advised. The main drainage ditch must be crossed using marked crossing points. The railway is out of bounds and can only be crossed using the bridge. Sandall Beat is well used by members of the public - please be courteous. 

Schools Competition

Individual & Team competitions for years 3 - 11. School organised groups or individuals welcome. There is no need to enter in advance, just turn up and we can take all the information at registration, although if you are bringing a group of children please This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. 

Children can run in pairs up to year 8 but must stay together. Shadowing is not permitted for the Yorkshire Schools Champs but is allowed if you are not competing specifically in the competition.

Prize-giving: 13.30. Prizes for first 3 girls and boys in each year. Team prizes for Primary & Secondary schools (4 to count).

Pupils should run the following courses:
