A regional orienteering event in the beautiful woodland and nature reserve of West Haigh and New Springs. Experienced orienteers will enjoyable the runnable terrain and interesting contour detail while newcomers and juniors are well catered for with the extensive path network. There are a range of courses to suit everyone from easy white to long technical brown, including a medium difficulty 7km extra long course for runners. 

Location

Grimethorpe, approx. 6 miles east of Barnsley. Signed at Grimethorpe Colliery Roundabout on A6195 south of Grimethorpe. Postcode: S72 7FD, GR: SE408083. Google Maps.

Parking

Roads and parking bays within Grimethorpe Industrial Estate. No Parking fee. If you don’t see a parking marshal please park considerately and safely avoiding blocking factory entrance gates and small industrial units. Please DO NOT park on the main road A6195.

Terrain

West Haigh is sloping, runnable beech and birch woodland with depressions and pits. All courses except White and Yellow visit this area. New Park Springs is a nature reserve planted on the old Grimethorpe Colliery tip. It is a mixture of hilly, rough and runnable open with fairly new planting which is extensively runnable. It makes a valuable addition to the previous West Haigh and Howell map. The extension to the map and new assembly area at the west of the map has provided new course planning options. White and Yellow are almost entirely on New Park Springs with much on strong paths in open areas.

White	1.8	35	10	The easiest course and a great place for children to start.  The course is entirely on paths and each time you have to make a decision - which path to take, there will be a control point. The maps for this course are given out at registration to give time for parents etc. to go through the course with juniors before the start.
Yellow	2.1	35	9	The next step up and a good place for teenagers etc. to start.  The course will use paths but also other line features - Fences, streams etc. It will also no longer have a control every time you need to decide where you are going. For example you may need to make a couple of turns on paths between controls. The maps for this course are given out at registration to give time for parents etc. to go through the course with juniors before the start.
Orange	2.9	35	10	Harder still, the Orange course introduces: Choosing routes - e.g. should I go round the paths to the left or right Using 'Point Features' as control sites
Long Orange	5.0	85	12	As for the orange but longer!
Extra Long Orange	7.0	145	14	And even longer.  Both this and the long orange are good for for older teenagers and adults who are used to running so want a good run with not too hard navigation. (distances are the straight line route and will be longer)
Light Green	3.7	45	11	Tricker than the orange courses but a bit easier than the harder courses.
Very Short Green	2.9	25	10	All these courses are as hard as the area allows.  As the distance increases there tends to be more opportunities for larger distances between controls allowing for more choices of routes etc.

Registration, Start & Finish

Registration is 50-300m from parking with the finish adjacent. The start is approx 1km from parking.

Loose Control Descriptions will be available in the start lanes.

You must report to download even if you do not complete your course as this is a safety check that all competitors are safely back.

Timing

SI electronic punching. The event will not feature contactless punching but SIAC cards can still be used. If you do not have an SI card you can hire one at registration.

Final results will be posted on this website, as soon as possible after the event. Provisional results will also be on display at download.

Dogs

Welcome in the car park but not on courses please.

Safety     

All competitors take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety. 

The area is well used by the general public. Dog walkers, mountain bikers, horse riders, quad bikes and motor bikes may be encountered – please give them a wide berth.

SYO Photography Policy

Please be aware that photography is permitted at all our events by spectators and parents though not anywhere where children may be changing e.g. club tent, car park, toilets, changing areas. Whilst the sharing of images taken at our events is not forbidden, please do think about how and where you share them and do not display children's names with the image.

Any parents not wishing their children to be photographed should inform the Event Organiser and a wristband will be issued. Photographers should not take photos of any child wearing a wristband and any that are accidently taken should be deleted. SYO will not share photos of children on websites, social media, posters, in the press and other publications unless we have parental permission.

If you have any concerns regarding inappropriate or intrusive photography please report them to an Event Official.
